East of Eden by John Steinbeck is the best book I have read so far this year. Steinbeck’s demonstration of the human condition is profound and relatable. His prose is clear and concise. His character work is so well defined that you know who is speaking at any time. Plot kept me hooked and I didn’t want to put the book down. One of the best endings I have ever read. Have read Of Mice and Men which I enjoyed thoroughly as well. Grapes of Wrath will be next.

For now, I will binge on the Netflix adaption!

Happy Charles Dickens Day! Today marks the birthday of Charles Dickens who was born in 1812. I have read Christmas Carol and Tale of Two Cities as a child but I do not remember much as I was too young then. Good day to start reading Oliver Twist which will be my first Dickens as an adult. Oliver Twist was originally serialised; published in monthly installments. This will make it easier to manage the book as I can read a couple of chapters at a go. Will aim to read at least one Dickens book a year perhaps in December?

January reads.

Also read digital copies of ‘Convenience Store Woman’ by Murata Sayaka, ‘Storm Front’ by Jim Butcher, ‘Bookshops & Bonedust’ by Travis Baldree, ‘The Seven Dials Mystery’ by Agatha Christie, ‘Orbital’ by Samantha Harvey, ‘Less’ by Andrew Sean Greer and ‘Days at the Morisaki Bookstore’ by Yagisawa Satoshi.

Slightly heavy on Japanese novels last month and I enjoyed reading ‘Norwegian Wood’ the most from this batch. Thoroughly loved my first John Steinbeck ‘Of Mice and Men’; cannot wait to get into ‘East of Eden’ and ‘Grapes of Wrath’ soon enough. Also would ‘Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookstore’ for book lovers when in a mood for light and cozy reading.

Belated post but these are the books I read in 2025. Not about the numbers but I read 69 books last year. Some of my favorites were ‘The Grace of Kings’ by Ken Liu; ‘The Stand’ by Stephen King; and ‘The Sword of Kaigen’ by ML Wang. Books that I went in blind and thoroughly enjoyed were ‘The Library at Mount Char’ by Scott Hawkins; ‘City of Thieves’ by David Benioff; ‘The Midnight Library’ by Matt Haig; and ‘Anxious People’ by Frederick Backman.

My first omnibus
Grew up reading 90s era of comics
Re-reading the stories again after 30 years
Mike Bagley’s spidey art is better than Todd McFarlane and Erik Larson’s who I think are already phenomenal
Nostalgia

This book is about
☠️human morality
⚖️social inequities
❤️‍🩹coping with loss

Ishiguro’s prose was a quick read but left me with a feeling of disquiet. The story made me reflect on the complex and brutal realities of life. Cannot quite describe the sadness I felt with this first reading. May be able to dive deeper into the various tropes with another reading in the future.
