Michelle here, and in typical fashion I didn’t even take a snap of the stage wall that propelled the timing of this collaboration: the ‘Beehive photographs’ taken by @charles.peterson.photographer 35 years ago, and the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind on this day in 1991.

I was navigating my first semester in college on the east coast when all of this went down—I remember the groundswell of interest, being surprised, being glad those Aberdeen boys made it to a global stage. But I was not close to it—so when earlier this year I kept gently nudging Charles, asking, ‘should we do something around this?’ I didn’t even know why I felt it so strongly.

Charles sent an email to @kexp sometime mid-August, and five weeks later, here we are, with an installation of Charles Peterson’s Nirvana at KEXP’s Gathering Space with their support and that of those wonderful losers at @subpopshops. 🙏🏾💗🙏🏾

The prints and texts are drawn from our exhibition in 2024-2025 at Tacoma Art Museum; Charles built a facsimile ‘mobile darkroom’ to keep the photo education going. Charles said it best in noting that this installation in a free public space of music and interaction is our gift to Seattle—all you have to do to receive it is show up.

The gift I received yesterday was watching people of all ages interact with the photographs, and read the texts as soon as we had installed them.

Thinking about myself in 1991, I couldn’t have imagined what has since unfolded in my rich and complex life in photography. I am glad I felt the pull of this album and this band through Charles’ powerful photographs, and then through the music, and that we listened & responded to that pull.

Hope you can take a moment to truly feel something you see today. I’m going to be hanging out with Charles’s DynaMic portrait of Kurt at home, knowing that through seeing it I am in communion with everyone who pauses to see that print hanging at KEXP…today through February. by @ya.tseen

We are pleased to announce a partnership with the Parker Palm Springs for their inaugural arts, music and design series, Parker Sessions at the Amphitheater, inviting forward-thinking artists, musicians, filmmakers and designers to create and converge.

For the opening session on October 16, we are excited to welcome our board member and acclaimed contemporary artist Nicholas Galanin, whose work, Never Forget, was one of the most visited installations of Desert X 2021, in conversation with prominent art collector and philanthropist Nancy Magoon.

The evening will start with a conversation between Galanin and Magoon, moderated by Bryan Barcena, West Coast Editor of Artforum exploring Galanin’s practice and his experience working in the Coachella Valley. Following the conversation, Galanin will perform with his band, Ya Tseen, an ever-evolving indie pop and electronic music project he developed alongside his artistic practice.

With VIP tickets, stay for an intimate dinner at mister parker’s hosted by Nancy Magoon, Nicholas Galanin and Desert X leadership.

All ticket proceeds from this event will support Desert X’s 10th anniversary in 2027.

The second pressing of @ya.tseen’s latest album, Stand On My Shoulders, is now available at the Sub Pop Mega Mart.

Stand On My Shoulders builds on connection and revolutionary love as the foundation for collective liberation that ran throughout Indian Yard. The album cover art is a monoprint created by Galanin, based on a photograph of his father in Tlingit regalia. The regalia remains, but the wearer isn’t visible, leaving space to be filled by future generations. With Stand On My Shoulders, Ya Tseen uplifts the gifts given to us by our ancestors and the collective responsibilities we have to future generations. The album is an incandescent exploration of existence and a celebration of the persistence of love and connection to Land.
