Teacher Amma 🍃
A project I hold dear to my heart!
Sugatha Kumari teacher, one of the most powerful environmental activists of Kerala. This is the story of a fighter, a strong human, a poet, and a passionate nature lover.

Teacher’s biography beautifully written by the talented @sanidasifali
Thankyou @roomtoreadindia for making me a part of this project. This book is truly a tribute to her legacy. Knowing that it will reach young readers in schools makes it even more special

From reading her poems in class to now bringing her story to life through art, this journey feels deeply personal. As someone who shares her love for the environment, this is my humble way of honoring a legendary soul🤍

In a lazy afternoon, I remember my grandma telling her life story. The crust of the story was, she dissatisfied for not pursuing a career, even though she was a graduate. Actually, leaving her desperate just because she had to take care of her family.

I heard my mother also regretting. Though Grandma's life actually gave her the fuel to pursue a job, that was not a career or life she dreamt of . She also had her share of regrets that she couldn't take care of her family and her family life due to career pressure.

Their life patterns are the basics for the learnings to move on. For generations, We all are searching for the ever elusive satisfaction in life. It isn't even the matter of career or family life or anything else. Can't say a particular thing would bring us lasting satisfaction in life. But the way we view life is that which bring satisfaction. It is a pattern of love and few happy moments!!

This was one illustration I did for last inktober. Thought of sharing the coloured version:')

മഴമേഘങ്ങൾ| Rain clouds 💙

Sharing a few illustrations created for Mathrubhumi’s Vishu edition. This story carried such a mysterious, quiet energy.
Shosha’s character was imagined almost like a forest itself. Dense, silent, protective, and full of untold stories. The very first illustration remains my personal favourite because of that.

Also, heartfelt kudos to Adarsh E for writing such an intriguing story, and for securing the prize in this issue’s story writing competition. It was truly special to visually interpret this world!

The incident at Sinhagad fort was very unfortunate. An 8 year old girl and her family were assaulted because she was wearing shorts, with the attackers claiming that her clothing was ‘ruining our culture’. When did culture become something that could be ruined by a someone’s clothes?

Culture is shaped by how we treat one another, with dignity, compassion, restraint and respect. When an eight year old’s clothing becomes a reason to shame, police or intimidate her, perhaps the question is not what she is wearing, but what they have allowed their minds to become.

Maybe culture is not so fragile that it can be ruined by a pair of shorts. Maybe what truly threatens it is the absence of humanity behind the eyes that judge them.
