Strawberry and Chocolate | Fresa y Chocolate (1993), directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea & Juan Carlos Tabío.

🎬 The first Cuban film to feature an overtly gay character, this landmark drama follows the unlikely friendship between a flamboyant artist and a young revolutionary in 1979 Havana, as they challenge each other’s ideas about identity, art and freedom.

¡Quba! (2024) directed by Kim Anno.

🎬 On the road to Cuba’s landmark 2022 marriage equality referendum, this documentary follows the activists, from the island’s first transgender government official to a Havana cultural icon using art as protest, who fought to change hearts in a country still wrestling with machismo and faith.

A Fantastic Woman | Una Mujer Fantástica (2017) directed by Sebastián Lelio.

🎬 After her partner’s sudden death, Marina, a transgender woman played by Daniela Vega, faces suspicion, hostility and erasure from his family and Chilean society at large, fighting simply to be allowed to grieve. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Baracoa (2026) directed by Luis Ernesto Doñas.

🎬 A journey through today’s Cuba with two characters at opposite ends of the spectrum: the homophobic Pepe and the drag queen Estrellita.
