‘Walking into a Blooming Season’ — my first solo exhibition in Shanghai, with @cub_ism_artspace, Sep 13 – Nov 1, 2025.

An experiment in the metaphor of the flower: shifting from public symbol to private language — reflecting on time, desire, emotion, resilience, and reunion.

Library Mothership has long been an admirer of London-based painter Yage Guo (@yagefg) , whose paintings and illustrations conjure a fantastical world of capricious, androgynous figures.

We recently commissioned Yage to write about the 20th-century Japanese artist #PaterSato, opening up Library Mothership’s rare book collection to her for research and reference. A little magic happened along the way, and the result is her gorgeous and ambitious essay, Airbrush Phantoms: Inside the Fantasy World of Pater Sato (《喷枪魅影：Pater Sato 的幻想世界》).

In an era of hyper-saturated, image-bombarded digital feeds, what happens when we open a Pater Sato art book and meet the gaze of his androgynous characters? They are daring, captivating, refuse to pander or be touched. Tracing Sato’s fleeting airbrush artwork and his mysterious characters, contemporary artist Yage casts a deeply affectionate retrospective on retro-futurism.

That’s a wrap on the residency! ✨

This period has been pure exploration. I finally tried things I’ve long turned over in my mind: airbrush, coloured pencils, and new painting methodologies. They yielded surprising results and feedback, all of which I’m excited to embody in my future work.

It has also been a quiet space for reflection. I realised that certain subject matters are always lingering in my mind. They exist like symbols and metaphors, constantly sending me signals. For a long time, I tried to pin down their origins or decode what was driving them. But the turning point wasn’t about making them verbally explainable—it was about understanding my relationship with them. I am finally getting clearer on that, and I’m ready to fully embrace them.
This has been such a crucial, experimental chapter for my practice.
