Seventeen years before a Japanese quartz watch ended Swiss dominance, this is what Japan was already building.

1952 Citizen’s triple calendar the first one Japan made. Sixteen jewels, printed on the dial. Japanese calendar wheels: the month reads 8月, the day reads 木. Domestic market, never exported.

CHAPTER 04 The Names That Didn’t Come Back

Two watches. One Swiss, one French. Neither name exists today.

Nicolet, Tramelan, 1916. A workshop that bought its movements from someone else and then patented a chronograph with no pushers at all, controlled entirely by the crown.

This isn’t that watch. It’s the ordinary one they made alongside it.

Difor, Besançon, 1945. Sold only by post. And not one name through the sixties it absorbed eight small houses:

Sarda
Lebem
A. Anguenot
Start
Ogier Loiseau
Ormo
Sumo
Polar

Eight names became one. In 1982, that one disappeared too.

They didn’t fail because they made bad watches. The ground they stood on went first.

The watches remained. The names did not.

Classic cars and vintage watches speak the same language: mechanics, history, and beauty that only time can create.

This Tudor Submariner Snowflake ref. 9411/0 felt right at home among the classics at Clutch N Carb. A 40mm Rolex Oyster case, Rolex crown and caseback, unmistakable Snowflake hands, a blistered blue dial, and a ghost bezel nothing here was made to look vintage. Time did all the work.

Built as a military tool and forever connected to the French Marine Nationale, it is now ready for its next collector.

This watch is older than most countries as we know them today.

An Omega from around 1915, preserved through generations, carrying stories we’ll never fully know.

Imagine how many wrists it has been on.
Imagine what it has witnessed.

Some watches tell the time.
Others tell history.

When everyone followed the trend, Breitling challenged it.
