#BioIntegratedDesign is interdisciplinary by nature, and the process rarely stays within one discipline.

From lab work and material research to welding, woodworking, digital fabrication, and assembly, building at a 1:1 scale means moving between methods, tools, and ways of thinking.

Leafing Space Demonstrator is a 1.5m x 1.5m prototype of the assembly we imagine for #Folymer application on site.

🍂Leafing Space is a #Folymer project. But what is Folymer?

Born from #leaflitter , Folymer explores the potential of turning what our cities discard into something that can sustain life.

What if the future of polymer is already falling from the trees?

Leafing Space is a @bio_id project. See the full digital portfolio of the project in the Bartlett Autumn Show link in bio.

🍂 Leafing Space explores how a leaf-litter-based biocomposite can reintroduce processes of decay and growth where impermeable ground can no longer support them.

🦠 Leafing Space

As cities become denser and permeable ground is replaced by hard infrastructure, we noticed a shift in how organic waste is processed.

Leaf litter, a carbon and nutrient source for decomposers and soil ecosystems, is often removed rather than broken down by microbial communities. This led us to ask: Can a leaf-litter-based biocomposite foster decomposer growth and enhance biodiversity in dense cities without expanding green spaces?

🍂🤎🧪

We investigated cellulolytic decomposers already present in urban soils and developed Folymer, a leaf-litter-based material designed to retain moisture and support microbial activity.

We then asked the material what it wanted to be.

Material experiments explored its fabrication and biological and mechanical limits, while environmental data and computational modelling informed patterns, layering and areas of growth and decay.

With digitally informed decisions and our experiences in building, a 1:1 prototype was developed.

One of the most rewarding things has been seeing how fallen leaves can open conversations about energy exchange, therapeutic crafting rituals and architectural typologies.

🤎

💚

These conversations have been like nutrients for me, changing how I see infrastructure: not ‘human-first’, but as a vessel for biological processes and behaviours.

[PARKLAND MEMORIAL]

February 14th 2018 challenged our community with the deepest sorrow and unimaginable fear. It took 17 irreplaceable pieces from us and with them, such heavyweight we never knew we could carry. They’ve inspired change, strength, aspirations, and hope in so many of us, we will be forever thankful.

Following the footsteps of their legacy, this proposal is a memorial space that will be a place of comfort and hope. It will be a space for families and friends to gather and cherish one another. It will be a place to find comfort on bad days, and to celebrate on good days; where our 17 missing pieces will be waiting to be with us from here on out.

“Holding space” means being physically, mentally, and emotionally present for someone. It means putting your focus on someone to support them as they feel their feelings.
What would it mean to create a physical environment that holds space for those who visit? Read more on @koda_miami website.

Our take on this memorial was among many impressive submissions. I encourage you to see the finalists and share your thoughts. We look forward to city of parkland’s rendition of this memorial. See more at @parkland_17

[AWARDS] AIA Florida

We are grateful for @aia_florida ‘s recognition of this project. It felt good to have been able to pay our respects and get this the attention it deserved at least among our profession.

I am grateful for the conversations this has opened up among our peers to take a hard look at ourselves and impact the field demands of us. Another thank you is due to Wesley, principal at @koda_miami for giving us the room and support to spend time on such a consuming topic. He wasn’t afraid to make us face this head on and it made the project that much more special.

[PARKLAND MEMORIAL]

It was an honor to be a part of the design team working on such an important and personal project. While closer to 6 years have passed, the residues of this tragedy stay with all of us in the community. This project is a tribute to our 14 friends and 3 mentors, who will forever be remembered and honored within their respective charities and the good their families choose everyday to spread in our community.

Thank you to my fellow #msdalumni who worked tirelessly. And even though the result wasn’t what we hoped it would be, it was an incredible process and a gift to have even a small part of what this means to all of us. @nikola.pdf @studio_chance

Datasets make the product; we make the datasets. All experiments connect to one another in an ecosystem curated by us. We call this,
"Workflow": It is a framework for the algorithms and a guide for the designers. It's also where we have the most control within this creative Deep Learning design space.
This new machine assisted format might come off unsettling to some. It is true that the responsibilities as a designer shift fron completing specific tasks to thinking and theorizing; iterating more. Details will come, and be perfected with time; but as designers we will never have less opportunities to create, than now.

Understanding limitations of any concept allows us to think beyond them. As architects, engineers, all round design enthusiasts, we owe it to ourselves to ground the work in meaningful, contextual evidence. Facts are challenging, but they make up most compelling design.
Three main parameters emerged: organizational, sturctural, and spatial; each representing a key design element.

Experiments in this project come in two-fold. Natural and Artificial. The natural world informs us, creating the parameters for digital world. While it is restrictive, this method allows us to stay relevant to the reality of the material.
The digital experiments you see above, allow us to analyze many complex concepts, and relate them to one another spatially. "we formulated a sequential connection strategy of training multiple deep neural networks with mycelium datasets to encode mycolic activity into 2D and later 3D architectural explorations." We tend to simplify site research into just the physicial conditions of an area while we miss the people, the traditions, the music, the culture, the history... Any aspect of what makes the space a place.

For this project, Ancienna Medina provided us with many points of inspiration. The project brief involved grounding this experimental approach in a city on the verge of a climate crisis. Ancienna Medina quarter in Casablanca, Morocco is classified as “infamous bidonville”, a “shantytown” (Beier, 2019).
