The extremely harsh 15-year prison sentence handed down on the independent journalist Yalda Moaiery last August marks a new chapter in the escalating crackdown on press freedom in Iran.
Yalda Moaiery never received her summons to appear in court. In August, the authorities had sent it via text message to a number that they themselves had blocked.
Since December, the regime has been regularly cutting off internet access and blocking journalists’ SIM cards. It also forbids them from communicating with media outlets abroad, on pain of being accused of espionage.
This is how she came to be convicted, whilst she was not present at the hearing, for having photographed the US-Israeli offensive at the start of the year.
Four years after the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement and the terrible crackdown on journalism that followed, the regime is set to pass a new law that curtails freedom.

Iranian people are caught between internal and external devils — a regime that meets economic desperation and protest with mass executions and closed-door trials, and a war that has killed thousands of civilians and destroyed homes, hospitals, and schools. From the 2009 Green Movement to the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom uprising to the economically driven protests of January 2026, this cycle keeps colliding with forces beyond ordinary people's control. This carousel traces the economic collapse, the record wave of executions, and the war's civilian toll — three crises converging on the same population.

My friend @yaldamoaiery has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by a Revolutionary Court in Tehran. The news has shocked the journalism and photojournalism community in Iran and around the world. It is another stark sign of the deepening repression in Iran, where even documenting reality can be treated as a crime.

The photos in this post are from Yalda’s 2024 solo exhibition, Standing in the Dust, at the Sausalito Center for the Arts in California (@shivasartsalon,) organized with @artistic_freedom_initiative and @diaspora.arts.connection, accompanied with a great conversation between Yalda, @rezaian and Prof. Persis Karim.

For more than two decades, Yalda has helped shape the visual history and collective memory of Iran. Her photographs have documented some of the country’s most consequential social and political transformations, alongside quieter moments that might otherwise have gone unseen. Repression, poverty, struggle, resistance, daily life, courage and resilience run through her work.

Behind every photograph is also a relationship of trust. People—women in particular—have allowed Yalda’s camera into public and deeply personal moments, giving her images an intimacy and emotional honesty that cannot be manufactured.

When these photographs were brought together for Standing in the Dust, many moved beyond the news events in which they first appeared and became part of a larger visual chronicle of a society in transformation. They age well with time because their stories do not end with the moment Yalda presses the shutter. They continue in our memory and imagination.

Today, her 15-year sentence gives these images another painful meaning. The photographer who has spent more than 20 years documenting the struggles, courage and humanity of Iranian society is once again paying a tremendous price for witnessing and recording its reality.

Standing with Yalda means standing for the right to see, to document and to remember. by @yaldamoaiery

Yalda Moaiery has spent more than two decades photographing Iran as it really is — women defying the hijab law, families after airstrikes, the moments of dissent state media won't show.

On Saturday August 8th, Iran's own National Journalist Day, she learned a court had sentenced her to 15 years in prison. She wasn't in the room. She wasn't given the charges. Security forces raided her home and took every camera she owns.

This is not new for her. She has already been detained, interrogated, and jailed once before for her work. What's new is the length of the sentence — and what it's meant to signal to every other journalist in Iran still holding a camera.

Jason Rezaian has known Yalda for years. In this video, he explains why her case matters, not just for her, but for press freedom in Iran right now.

Say her name. Share her work.

Yalda Moaiery (@yaldamoaiery) is not a criminal, but she's just been sentenced to 15 years in prison for her reporting.

The #IWMF condemns this sentence and stands with Yalda, our 2023 Justice for Women Journalists Award winner, who has been one of few independent voices telling the stories of Iranian women over the past three decades.

Yalda Moaiery has spent decades photographing Iran - its wars, protests, and people. Now she has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for her work.

“It is an unjust sentence,” she told us. “But refusing to move in the direction of the Islamic Republic’s propaganda … carries a price. I have accepted that price.”

'Resistance' will be opening at House of Lucie LA on August 29th with a reception from 5:00 - 8:00 PM!

Curated by Sarah Leen, Resistance brings together images from four separate but thematically intertwined urgent issues: the American experience with ICE and migration enforcement, the Iranian uprising, the war in Ukraine, and the ongoing Palestinian struggle for freedom and self-determination. Through photography and visual storytelling, the exhibition examines acts of defiance, survival, and resilience in the face of overwhelmingly oppressive realities. The works presented here reflect the enduring human spirit and the ways individuals and communities continue to resist systems of control while fighting to preserve their dignity and hope.

Opening Reception: August 29th 5:00 - 8:00 PM
Exhibition Dates: August 27th - November 6th, 2026

An honour to write about @yaldamoaiery for Reuters — albeit a story one never wants to report, but it’s critical to highlight the systematic oppression of journalists.

Yalda Moaiery received a 15 year sentence for her work and was tried in abstentia in Iran. Thank you Yalda for trusting me with something so sensitive, and for your commitment to journalism.

When Moaiery arrived at Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, she was not given formal case documents, she said. Instead, a friend accompanying her copied details from a charge sheet by hand. Rights groups say such procedures reflect a lack of transparency in Iran’s judicial system.

“On this occasion, they took everything, including even the cameras I had owned since childhood,” she said.

“I was subjected to several interrogations, and eventually my case was referred to Branch 33 of the Security Prosecutor’s Office and subsequently to the Revolutionary Court.”

Moaiery’s work has mainly focused on women. She photographed some of the earliest documented detentions of women by morality police, including a 2007 image showing two women sitting in white police vans, with tears streaming down their faces.

Moaiery said she remained committed to her work despite the prospect of further imprisonment.

“None of these sentences, however, has ever caused me to abandon my path, even for a moment. I have continued to document and show the realities of Iranian society,” she said.

“I don’t have anything to lose. The regime took everything from me and the only thing that I still have is my truth and honesty as an observer.” by @yaldamoaiery
