👏 Kenny Yip, a fourth-year Chemical & Environmental Engineering Ph.D. candidate, has received the Prize Teaching Fellows award—a recognition considered among the most important honors that Yale bestows upon graduate students.

The award recognizes Ph.D. students who have served as teaching fellows or part-time acting instructors in Yale College. The nomination process is unique, as the honorees have been nominated by the students they taught. "I never imagined that I would be nominated for this," said Yip.

💭 Certain materials mark their histories—think of it like leaving footprints in the sand. #YaleEngineering researchers have recently discovered that networks of flowing water and other fluids can store their own memories, similar to a computer chip.

Computers typically store information in electronic memory devices. The study, recently published in "Physical Review X," demonstrates that information about past flows can also be stored in the configurations of flexible fibers. This would give engineers and scientists the ability to record memory and data on devices which operate in environments that are incompatible with traditional hardware.

Tobacco products keep changing. And the science used to understand them is keeping up.

For more than a decade, Yale researchers and their collaborators have tracked how tobacco and nicotine products evolve, producing research that has helped shape regulation in Massachusetts and continues to inform how we understand new products as they emerge.

In addition to becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all time, "Toy Story 5" broke new ground in animation technology thanks to the research of #YaleEngineering Professor Theodore Kim.

Pixar animators referenced Kim’s 2023 research paper, “Lifted Curls: A Model for Tightly Coiled Hair Simulation,” in order to animate the textured hair of Blaze, a Black-Armenian character in the film. In the past, computer animation tools had limited ability to portray hair beyond straight or wavy styles, leaving a gap in representation for characters of color.

“We came up with a way that was very different from the way others had been doing it for over a decade," said Kim.

🎉 Di Zhang, a biomedical engineering postdoctoral associate at #YaleEngineering, has been named a 2026 STAT Wunderkind. This award recognizes early-career scientists and researchers who are already making a difference in the medical field.

As part of Prof. Rong Fan's lab, Zhang has built tools that help scientists better understand how the brain responds to injury and repairs itself.

“I really want to know how the brain works,” said Zhang. “The brain orchestrates everything: our emotions, how we remember things, how we think, and how we think lets us become what we are.”
