A Tasmanian tiger joey, at real size
𝘛𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘴
This is TMAG A930, a male pouch young about 9.5 weeks old, held at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. He's furless, his ears are still folded flat, and he already has tiny claws on every digit. He's 22 cm long.
I made this 3D model from open-access micro-CT scans published by Newton et al. (2018). Those scans show his whole skeleton and organs, from the developing teeth to his brain, lungs, heart, liver and kidneys (slide 2).
I first printed the series at home on a small Bambu printer, in black. Then UNSW Making printed him life-size in white, like the model that inspired me in a TMAG video.
2. His internal organs (Newton et al. 2018, Fig. 6)
3. X-ray view at real size
Open museum data means anyone can study and share these animals. Thylacines went extinct in 1936, but their pouch young are still teaching us how marsupials grow.
Data: Newton, A.H. et al. (2018) Royal Society Open Science 5: 171914. Figure reproduced under CC BY 4.0.

Fish we saw snorkelling at Nusa Penida, Bali

We went out on Indonesia’s Independence Day (17 August) caught a boat from Sunur then a speed boat from Nusa Penida out to the reefs. We stop at three places and jumped in, the water was warm and so clear. A few of the standouts, sketched from the photos I took. I also saw giant ray swim by so gracefully and others saw a green sea turtle.

Palenose Parrotfish, 𝘚𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘴
Reef Manta Ray, 𝘔𝘰𝘣𝘶𝘭𝘢 𝘢𝘭𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪
Sea Turtle (likely Green Turtle, 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘺𝘥𝘢𝘴)

Snorkelling with the family was highlight of our trip. I hope this area stays protected as the water was clear, unpolluted and full of coral and wildlife.

My art piece for standard art show organised by @leigh.lostpropertyoffice. A marsupial is born very altricial, undeveloped. Hairless, blind, death and no sense of smell, the size of a jellybean or smaller, it crawls unaided to the pouch. These 14 hand-painted field notes document newborn marsupials at the moment of birth, annotated with anatomy and measurements drawn from the scientific literature, including my own published research on marsupial neonatal development. From fat tailed dunnart to eastern grey kangaroo. Shown last week at Goodspace Gallery, Chippendale as part of the STANDARD group show. Printed zines available. @_compartment_

6 week old platypus drawings taken from Wilson 1895. Studying early development in the platypus, 𝘖𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘩𝘺𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴.

This illustration is based on historical material from Wilson, J. T. (1895). “On the development of the monotremes and the morphology of the egg of 𝘖𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘩𝘺𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘴” and work by Barrow, F. H., depicting a 6–8 week post-hatching young (~80 mm CRL). At this stage, the body remains soft and rounded, with developing limbs and the distinctive bill already clearly defined.

Monotreme development continues to fascinate — retaining ancestral features while expressing highly specialised mammalian traits. These early stages offer a rare window into developmental and evolutionary transitions.

Reinterpreting archival material through drawing is part of my ongoing work on comparative development across monotremes and marsupials.
