Meet the artist ahead of our upcoming show “Près d’Elle”

Yanma Fofana is a French painter of Ivorian descent, born in Paris in 1999. A graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris with the jury's highest honours, she became the first laureate of the Maison Perrier Art Prize in 2026, which took her to Accra where she is undertaking a residency under the mentorship of Amoako Boafo.

Her painting is born of family life. Working from old photographs as much as from scenes lived today, she gathers the moments shared with her loved ones as if to hold them back from the passing of time. Her mother has become the pillar of this world, a protective figure through whom a whole lineage seems to stand, and whose gestures carry the memory of those who came before. Around her, the everyday is quietly enchanted: plants and imagined creatures appear like guardians, and the domestic scene opens onto a realm of belief and the unseen.

Her canvases never quite settle. She paints, erases and rearranges, building colour in successive layers until her figures seem to radiate from within, while the surface keeps the trace of every revision, like a memory reshaping itself each time it is recalled. Somewhere between the family archive and imagination, her work asks what we inherit, what we protect, and what we allow, slowly, to fade.

The Bridge Gallery is very pleased to announce Yanma Fofana and Fanny Irina’s duo exhibition, “Close to her”, curated by Louise Thurin. The show will open on October 14th at the gallery in Paris, from 7 to 10 pm, in company of both artists.

Yanma Fofana and Fanny Irina met in 2018, just as they were starting their preparatory year for art school at Beaux Arts de Paris. What began as a chance encounter between two students turned into a friendship, and over the years into something closer to family. Près d'elle is the first time their work shares the same walls.

It is an intimate Milky Way in which each painting and each enamelled card becomes a landmark for finding one's way through their worlds and marvelling in the wake of their luminous sisterhood.” — Louise Thurin

We're delighted to welcome French painter Yanma Fofana to dot.ateliers. Yanma is the inaugural winner of the Maison Perrier Art Prize, selected from over 600 applicants by a jury which included our founder, Amoako Boafo.

Trained at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, Yanma's paintings return again and again to family . Her own, Ivorian background, its customs and its preserved material, held close and reworked in layered, dreamlike brushwork. Memory and erasure sit at the centre of her practice; so does an openly stated debt to painters like Matisse, filtered through and returned to her own culture.

Over the next six weeks, alongside a mentorship with our founder, we're curious to see how Accra with its light, textures, and cultural richness ties into the larger family portrait.

Yanma Fofana est la lauréate de la première édition du MAISON PERRIER Art Prize.
Yanma Fofana (née en 1999, France) est une artiste peintre basée à Paris.
Formée aux Beaux-Arts de Paris, elle a également étudié à l’Otis College of Art and Design à Los Angeles ainsi qu’à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Vienne.
Son travail prend la sphère familiale comme point de départ et la conçoit comme un espace de mémoire instable, façonné par des processus d’apparition et d’effacement. Ses peintures mettent en scène des figures souvent fragmentées ou tenues à distance, évoluant dans des espaces à la fois construits et incertains. Sa pratique repose sur des procédés de superposition, de glacis et d’effacement qui donnent naissance à des surfaces mouvantes. Le violet, récurrent dans ses œuvres récentes, contribue à créer une atmosphère à la fois intime et onirique.
Notre jury a été captivé par sa perspective unique. Elle débutera prochainement sa résidence sous le mentorat d’Amoako Boafo afin de créer un design en édition limitée sur des packagings de boissons MAISON PERRIER®.
