What happens when a documentary photographer starts making 3D art?

For @yann.visuals, it started with a chair.

After two decades traveling the world with a camera and making documentaries, Yann took some time off during Covid and taught himself woodworking. Curious if he could create a digital twin of one of his chairs, he searched “how to make 3D?” and ended up down a much deeper rabbit hole.

Today, he works across Cinema 4D, Houdini, and TouchDesigner, bringing a photographer’s eye for light, composition, detail, and realism into every scene.

And that obsession with realism? You can see it in every frame.

Here are a few renders of the Monstera plant (as a Gaussian Splat) inside a 3D office room. The plant fits nicely in its surrounding catching the light from the office windows and casting shadows on the floor.

Gaussian splats have been around for a while now but 3D softwares are starting to make their integration, manipulation and rendering easier and better. In this video (long version on my YouTube page) I’m showing the entire process of making a gaussian splat of a monstera plant : from initial capture to alignement in RealityScan, training in Postshot and rendering in real time in both Cinema 4D and Houdini 22. I’m rendering with Otoy Octane in both softwares. As splats are nothing more than points (point cloud), there manipulation and transformation are easy to do in Houdini and offer endless creative possibilities. Here in the video I did a very simple setup of splittingt the leaves and stems from the rest of the splat and creating a fake wiggle as to replicate some wind blowing through the plant.

What started as a simple RBD spawn test ended up - as often - in a full 40 seconds animation. One idea leading to another : what about mixing them? What about making them fall into a jar? What about splitting them? What about... ? Those ideas, those tests and those (many) technical explorations are what drive my curiosity and creativity.
Couple of RBD simulations with custom curve path follow, one FLIP simulation and many, many nuts.

Short 3D animation telling the story of a single small plastic wheel turning into a chair and bringing life to an artist’s atelier. This work is inspired by @vipp beautiful furniture and photography.

Chair, desk and lamp are @vipp 3D models that I reworked or remodeled to look best. Props and decoration are assets from @angelo.ferretti.ld other assets and textures like the gorgeous concrete floor from @texture.supply and @greyscalegorilla curtain fabric by the one and only @silverwingvfx

Happy to share my 2026 Reel 🎉
Not so long ago all my work consisted of still renders. Today with amazing tools like Houdini & Cinema4D I think I can say I’m a motion designer 😉
Always nice to see so many projects combined in a single video. Reminds me of all the projects I’ve worked on - and the amount of hours it took!

Eternal loop. Turning objects into grains, and grains into objects…

Using Houdini Rest State UV’s to project an image onto the grains. This way based on the camera position the last image of the grains on the floor has a UV projection that is identical to the first image of the objects standing in the 3D scene.
