🇬🇧 The Milky Way Arch at 3,000 meters

The Pain de Sucre is a mountain peak located in the Queyras Regional Nature Park, rising to 3,200 meters. While it isn’t the highest mountain in the range, the ascent is one of the shortest and offers a perfect vantage point to gaz at numerous peaks, including Mont Viso. Since I was familiar with the terrain, I had the idea to capture a Milky Way panorama there, taking advantage of the clear sky and the exceptional elevation for nightscapes. By hiking up quickly to arrive at sunset, I was able to enjoy the sunset and set up my equipment to prepare the panorama. Fortunately the sky remained clear without a single cloud, as far as Switzerland.
Here is the result: 8 tiles for the sky and 10 for the foreground, the latter captured in moonlight.

🇬🇧 Mirror lake, in the Queyras natural park, lives up to its name. It is a medium-sized altituded lake, surroundered by larch trees, offers views on Veyres Ridge, whose snowy northern faces makes a great color contrast. Since the lake is protected from the wide, it creates wonderful reflections.

🇬🇧 Another photograph taken at Upper Blanchet Lake in the Queyras regional natural park. The conditions were nearly ideal: an interesting foreground with these flowers, a calm lake producing beautiful reflections, and a clear sky with little light pollution. In the end, the hardest part was finding the best composition, since there were so many possibilities. The quality of the sky allows for the revelation of galactic dust—which appears brown here—as well as the large hydrogen nebulae emitting in the red.

Unveilling the mysteries of the winter Milky Way

In early September, @anthonynightscapes suggested I join him at the Col d’Allos, famous in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence for the scenery it offers all along the road; and the reason we had our sights set on it was because of its relatively low levels of light pollution and excellent views of the night sky. During that night, I had the chance to photograph various constellations, and towards the end of the night, at around 5 am, Orion’s Belt began to rise at our latitudes.
This isn’t my first photo of Orion this year, but it is the first in which I’ve focused on both the captured image and the post-processing, my aim being to reveal as much dust as possible. Naturally, the major nebulae of the winter sky are visible. We also see Anthony who was checking on his camera.

🇬🇧 Cosmic Revelation

Since Allos Lake is a prime location in the Procence Alpes Côte d'Azur region for astrophotography, here is a new nightscape showcasing the lake from its northern shore, which offers one of the best views of the lake itself, the Tours—the mountains enclosing the cirque to the south—and the Milky Way, the brightest part of which is directly south in the summer.
I focused my efforts on the H-alpha layer—that is, the hydrogen nebulae—and I’m quite pleased with the result, which is higher in contrast and more detailed than usual. You’ll be able to appreciate all the details of the Rho Ophiuchi Loop and the Zeta Ophiuchi Nebula.
The processing of the Milky Way is fairly standard, and it’s always a pleasure to see the wealth of detail revealed by stacking and a very wide-aperture lens.

🇬🇧 Upper Blanchet Lake Beneath the Milky Way

Located in the Queyras Natural Park in the Hautes-Alpes department, at the far end of the Saint-Véran valley, Upper Blanchet Lake is reached after a moderate 10-kilometer hike through one of the most beautiful valleys in the Queyras. Once you pass the Refuge de la Blanche and climb a few hundred more meters, you’ll reach two very secluded lakes nestled in a small valley dominated by the Tête des Toillies. Thanks to its isolation, the Queyras offers a beautiful night sky, and with its impressive landscapes, it provides plenty of opportunities for creative composition. By positioning yourself in the right spot, you can capture a beautiful alignment between the Rho Ophiuchi molecular cloud and the Tête des Toillies.

Thanks to long exposures and stacking, I was able to capture the galactic cirrus clouds surrounding the Milky Way—thin clouds of dust.
Swipe left for various details of the scene.

🇬🇧 My photos of the partial solar eclipse taken above @valbergalpesdusud and Péone in the Alpes-Maritimes. Since I didn’t have much time in August and was looking above all for good visibility, my friend @f_poteur and I climbed the local mountain to 2,200 meters to ensure the best possible view, as the sun sets early. My friend brought his 1,250mm telescope and a small equatorial mount, and thanks to the shepherds—whom I’d like to thank—we were able to use their table to set up an excellent viewing spot.
Also the composition is subbpar, I liked the Sun setting over the Col des Champs.

This was a major project for me—in terms of its scope, the details I wanted to capture, and the look I sought to achieve.
Here is the Milky Way arching over Allos lake in June with sttong airglow. After an afternoon that was completely overcast, the sky cleared just as night fell, allowing me to shoot all night long. Since Allos lake has excellent skies and offers numerous compositional possibilities, I looked for a spot east of the lake, that would overlook it, while the Milky Way rises next to Mont Pelat, one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the area.
The post-processing phase was the most challenging, with a series of errors, crashes, and having to backtrack, but it was enjoyable I had the opportunity to experiment with new methods.

2nd slide : detail of Cygnus.
3rd slide : detail of Cassiopea's nebulas
4th slide : detail of the Milky Way core and Rho Ophiuchi molecular cloud.

🇬🇧 I’ve long wanted to do some astrophotography at the Col de la Bonette, known as the highest road in Europe, so Anthony and I drove up to a spot just below the highest point to set up on a southeast-facing plateau. Needless to say, the view is incredible—the photo speaks for itself. From this spot, we can see almost all the lower mountain ranges. Taking advantage of one of the best night skies in the entire Mercantour, I was able to capture as much detail as possible and reveal the Galactic Cirrus—a type of reflection nebula composed of dust, generally invisible without long exposure times.
You can see some of the Mercantour’s popular peaks standing out against the residual light pollution, above which the night sky shines with exceptional clarity.
For this photo, I used a Sony A7III astro moded by Eos 4'Astro, a Sigma 24mm lens open at F/1.4, all mounted on a MoveShootMove Nomad tracking mount. I strenghten HII regions with an Astronomik 12nm HA filter. by @yann__l2

•

🇬🇧 Here is my most successful astrophotography project to date: the summer Milky Way arch stretching across the Mercantour sky.
The idea came to me on a whim; I don’t usually shoot panoramas—in fact, this is my first—but you have to take the plunge sometime. The constellation Cassiopeia rising above a secondary peak inspired me to create more than just a single shot of the Milky Way, and since the landscape was naturally photogenic, I began capturing individual frames with a rough idea of the overlap. Taking the photos was the easy part; the processing took a long time, but seeing the panorama gradually take shape kept me motivated.
So here is the summer arc of the Milky Way taken above a small plateau, with its HII nebulae visible thanks to the addition of HA exposures, from north to south, where the galactic bulge emerges from the mountains of @valbergalpesdusud .

I used a @sonyalpha A7III with an @eos4astro filter, a 12 Astronomik HA filter, a @moveshootmove tracker, and a @sigmafrance 24mm lens.

🇬🇧 The story behind this photo is a bit funny because the location wasn’t exactly planned. I was shooting moonscapes and star trails on the plateau below, visible in the photo, while waiting for the moon to set. I got carried away experimenting with different compositions for a little too long, because I realized that I had to hurry to get to my nightscape spot up on the hill. On the way up, I reached a point where I had two choices: continue on the slightly longer path, or take a shortcut through a slate ravine. I opted for the second option, which was fun but a bit tiring, as the slope was steep. I wandered around the ravines for a while looking for the best places to cross, eventually making my way back to the grass, which was more stable, finished my climb, and reached a spot with a good view of the valley below, which suited me.

🇬🇧 At the foot of Mount Viso, which is completly concealed behind clouds, the feeling of being at the world's end, paired with the wonderful landscape, make Ristolas valley one of the most beautiful spofs of the Queyras natural park. Cloudy weather contrasts naturally with the grass, and using long exposure on the water creates matching tones with the sky.
