„Studies for a portrait“ is a solo electric guitar piece written by Austrian composer Clemens Gadenstätter. A key element in the piece is that the right hand never plucks but actually holds a bottle neck and moves it between the bridge and neck pickups, creating a false movable bridge that changes the length of the string and as such transforms the pitches and intonation. Along with the left hand hammer ons and right leg on a pitch shifter, all together we get a swirl of microtonal counterpoint that is colored by various ambiance stomp boxes manipulated by my other leg. The result is one of the most unique sound world solo pieces I have ever played and the only one I had no choice but to play by heart. Link to the full performance in bio. by @yarondeutsch

(UPDATE: complete video now available in bio link). Delighted to share this first excerpt from the world premiere performance of Sarah Nemtsov’s „EMP“ for violin & electric guitar. Composed already in 2023 for Irvine Arditti and myself we finally had a chance to sync diaries and perform it last month at the Interfinity festival. The Program also included two additional duets - a world premiere by Zeynep Toraman and an earlier work by Kelley Sheehan - along with solos by Lisa Illean & Rebecca Saunders. Thank you very much to Zeynep & Sarah for the new beautiful pieces and no less to Lukas Loss, Interfinity director, making all this possible & joyous. Today is a truly special release day.
Since my first days of playing contemporary music, eagerly searching for repertoire, I’ve had Tristan Murail’s „Les Nuages de Magellan“ (for electric guitar, percussion & 2 ondes martenot) on my radar.
The challenge was always finding two ondes martenot players and a dedicated producer to support the performance. This 1973 creation is, in my opinion, Murail and the spectral movement at their absolute best in a chamber music constellation. It’s a true epitome of what I imagine the early years of Ensemble l’Itinéraire to be with Murail himself on the ondes and Claude Pavy on e-guitar alongside many other greats.
Sadly, the piece is rarely performed. But after 20 years of attempts, I am thrilled to share the first ever live video capture of the work, filmed earlier this year at the Interfinity festival.
Joining me on stage are the fantastic Stefano Grasso (percussion), Ludovic van Hellemont, and Tatiana Touliankina (ondes martenot).

Here it is: our new Basel team for contemporary music with our new professor, violinist Sarah Saviet!
With Sarah joining, the mixture of musical backgrounds, experiences, and mileage available makes me feel like going back to school. As we enter the second quarter of the 21st century, playing and interpreting contemporary music requires much more than good technique and musical skills. Unlike the past, a wide variety of interpretations for newly published works is easily available today. As such, the creative aspect - the singularity of the performer and performance - is needed more than ever for the young graduate. Hence our new department’s name: “Creative Interpretation in Contemporary Music.”
And for the students out there, searching for a masters program, this is for you:
If you want to master your chamber music skills.
If you are up for in-house concerts and touring (our class often performs at festivals and collaborations around Europe).
If you want to join a large community of composers, theorists, audio designers, improvisers, and fellow interpreters.

An Autumn of encounters will set the tone for my upcoming tour plans. 🍂🎶
Here is what’s on the horizon:
• Kicking off at the Transit & Rainy Days Festivals with the Arditti Quartet & Stefan Prins.
• A van road trip from Luxembourg to Graz (and back) playing multiple shows along the way with double bassist Florentin Ginot. 🚐💨
• Celebrating Nikel’s 20th Anniversary in Bern, performing Matthew Shlomowitz & Jennifer Walshe‘s “Minor Characters” joined by Jenny on stage.
• Straight after we’ll continue to the London Contemporary Music Festival with Noa Frenkel.
• Plus various solo sets, including my first-ever visit to Ljubljana for two shows at the Ljubljana New Music Forum 2026!

Season opening announcement: we‘ll be kicking off our 26/27 the season with an outdoor concert in Bern (Rosengarten, September 17th, 18:30) featuring a 60 minute piece by Klaus Lang titled „Bright Darkness“. The event and music are designed to accompany sunset so as we hit the last note, we should be under a stary sky. I love the sound of an amp “breaking” and the quality of it responding to dynamics and articulation with no volume pedal in the way. This time fiddling through an old Paul McCartney classic with a heavy Hendrix feel though not sure how many actually know the tune. And still - a classic. Rust Never Sleeps sings Niel Young and so is the act of music making. Winter, spring, summer or fall, there are always things happening once the lights go out and the concert season ends. On my end, I am happy to share that I have recently completed the recordings of my upcoming solo album (hopefully out in early 27) and with Nikel we’re just at the mastering phase of an extensive triple vinyl box set due in December. The release will include some of our most favorite repertoire written between 2016 - 2026 and will feature various new recordings we’ve put together at the great Photophone studio in Renens, Switzerland.
Further updates will follow soon and till then, wishing you all a great summer.

I am delighted to join the Gringolts Quartet for the 2nd International Mizmorim Masterclass due this coming winter. Apart from the content and line up it is quite astonishing that the Mizmorim platform is able to offer the two chosen ensembles - accommodation and travel coverage along with no participation fee. Obviously quite utopian but when possible a good word should be given. Thank you Michal, Felix and the whole team. Application deadline is July 17th. Another school year is over and before heading home, I remain true to the habit of a selfie on my teaching room’s terrace (already five of them in the collection). We’ve had a dense year that was well showcased on our graduates’ ATTACCA festival, making me very proud of the masters. This was also Marcus Weiss’ last year on the team (he’ll continue only with the saxophone class) and we are very much looking forward having violinist Sarah Saviet joining. Reflecting the ongoing warm vibe among all, we also enjoyed a lovely reunion with former professor Mike Svoboda who showed up to hear this year’s results. Congratulations to all graduates. A few months ago I had the pleasure of premiering with violinist Irvine Arditti, Sarah Nemtsov’s new piece for violin & electric guitar titled „EMP“. Today the complete performance went online with the beautiful video work of @musicianseyebasel and sound capturing of engineer Jonas Prina. The piece features a vast canvas of techniques and sonorities with both instruments going through two separate Moog Ring Modulators. Thank you Sarah for the imaginative creation and to @interfinity_ for producing and hosting the project. Complete video is available now in the bio link and here is a follow up excerpt after last month’s first teaser.
