Are you coming to Sheffield DocFest?

Come check this!

Stitch n Bitch Editors will be offering consultancies

Thursday and Friday, from 10am
Cutler’s Hall, Sheffield

Making a documentary is a hard slog, particularly in this time of shrinking budgets and limited funding opportunities. And for independent documentary makers it can often be fairly late in their career before they get to sit down with a professional editor.

And that’s a real shame because a good documentary editor (the clue is in the name) doesn’t just push buttons: they are an integral part of the editorial process and will look at your project with the question: “how can I help this person tell the best possible story with this material?”

Stitch n bitch have assembled a panel of highly experienced editors with many festival films, TV hours and some sparkly awards under their belts, and we will be at DocFest to give you the expert edit therapy you need.

You can show up at the consultancies and book a session with our team. Bring your sizzle or an outline of your story structure. Or just bring questions about entering the industry, organising your rushes or how much edit time to allocate in your budget, there’s no problem we can’t cut through!
We’d love to see you, and to help support your film being the best it could possibly be.

Book here for Thursday slots:

I directed my first single film, and I’m excited to share it with you. More than anything, because I know how important it is to Pa to finally be able to tell his own story.

Pa Salieu's story is complex and deeply personal, but in many ways, it reflects the lived experiences of so many people like him. It’s a story of loss, love, resilience and redemption at its core.

I hope this film helps you to understand some of the defining moments that have shaped Pa, through his eyes and to recognise that young men like Pa are deeply affected by the social issues and personal challenges they face, even if society normalises them.

Spending time with Pa, I’ve come to know him as a kind, sensitive old soul. Quiet at times, but always observing. He’s a devoted family man but also cares deeply about his wider community. He is a proud Black, Gambian man from Coventry, his home and his culture are woven into everything he creates. Undoubtedly, he’s an incredibly gifted writer and musician - driven by his love for the craft and the power it gives him to feel free from everything.

Big love to everyone involved… on camera and behind the scenes.

18 months ago I spent my birthday in Colombia’s most notorious, highest security prison with Britain’s biggest cocaine trafficker and the end result was ‘The Bus Driver: Britain’s Cocaine King’. Everything about the project was tough from the access all the way through to the edit. A true emotional rollercoaster. So overjoyed for all who worked so hard that we got an RTS West nom!! @yasslestix @johnnyyates.composer @hana.mallett taken in Bogotá, Colombia by @yasslestix

Last September I stepped into one of the world’s dangerous prisons to spend 3 days with the enigma that is Jesus Ruiz Henao, the prolific cocaine trafficker known as “Britain’s Escobar”. Many times it felt like having a fascinating fireside chat with a Grandpa and I had to kick myself that this was a guy who once stored £72 million in cash in a flat in Russell Square and extracted cocaine out of plastic suitcases using jet oil, all the while staying under the radar by driving, funnily enough, the same London bus I took to school.

The mission to bring Ruiz Henao to justice was at the time the largest non-terrorist police investigation ever. With 100 surveillance officers working around the clock.

Yet somehow Ruiz Henao’s story has gone unnoticed, until now…

‘The Bus Driver: Britain’s Cocaine King’ is premiering on 12th August on Discovery +.

Thanks to the unflappable Ed Taylor and Ros Edwards at @honey.bee.tv .

Romy Page and Matt Reid and Charlotte Reid for keeping the faith.

My brilliant editors @yasslestix and Meg Townend

Composer @johnnyyates.composer for the sublime score

Ever supportive PM @hana.mallett

Jon Hughes for being the best person to enter a prison with

Excellent right hand man AP Simon Cerf

The Colombian crew who always went the extra mile and had my back - Yerlin, Nando and more.

And last but definitely not least Sam Taplin for doggedly pursuing the access and bringing me on board taken in Bogotá, Colombia by @yasslestix
