Zoom up on those 👄 This painting fought me the entire way.
So I stepped back, looked at it differently, and stopped forcing it.
Turns out the piece knew where it wanted to go before I did.

I’m not pro-war, and I’m not trying to glorify violence or push some kind of message with my art. I have a lot of respect for the people who have served, and for the sacrifices they and their families have made. I spent time as a combat medic, and those experiences are a part of me. Sometimes they influence the way I see something or the feeling I’m trying to put into a piece. That doesn’t always mean I’m trying to make a statement or tell anyone what they should think. I’ve also found it really interesting to use apes and our connection to our earliest ancestors as a way of exploring something much more fundamental, that underneath everything we’ve built as humans, we’re still animals. We have instincts, emotions, fear, curiosity, aggression, compassion, connection… all of these things that are much older than civilization. There’s something really fascinating to me about stripping away all the modern layers and getting back to that more instinctive, animal side of what makes us human. For me, sometimes art is a way of exploring those feelings. Sometimes it’s beautiful, dark, or uncomfortable. Sometimes I’m just trying to capture a feeling or an idea that’s difficult to put into words. taken in Corvallis, Oregon by @yattoo_dan

I’ve been a little quiet on here lately.
Over the past several months, I made the decision to step away from tattooing and social media for a bit—to travel, reset, create, and make room for some experiences outside of my usual world.
Along the way, I had the opportunity to collaborate with some incredibly talented artists through Magic Wheelchair, helping bring larger-than-life costume builds to life for kids in wheelchairs. What started as an opportunity to create alongside other artists quickly became something I found a real passion for.
There’s something pretty special about watching a group of people pour their creativity, time, and ridiculous amounts of imagination into giving a kid the chance to become whatever they’ve dreamed of being. Getting to play even a small part in those moments has been one of the most meaningful and genuinely fun creative experiences I’ve had in a long time.
I’ve traveled, gotten a little lost, made some things I never expected to make, met some amazing people, and came back feeling creatively recharged. This is an amazing organization that I know truly has a passion in making these kids smile,and giving them something I’ve never seen before ☺️👏If you know anybody, child, young adult, who would benefit from this, it is 100% free, and if you would like to contribute to the @magicwheelchair , you won’t regret it ☺️☺️🙌👏
And now…it’s time to tattoo again. 🙌
My books are officially opening for September appointments.
I’m excited to get back behind the machine, reconnect with everyone, and start making some badass art together again.
If you’ve been waiting to start something new, continue a project, or finally tackle that big piece we’ve talked about—September is open.
