With the start of autumn comes the start of bulb planting season. It’s a time to revisit gardens I planted up earlier in the year to see how they’re establishing and to add a few extra pops of colour for next spring and summer. I particularly love the fact that my clients can’t see what I’ve added immediately and the surprises come as a rolling slow reveal over the course of many months 😊
.
I like to treat bulbs just the same as any other plants in that I set them all out first before digging any holes so I can make tweaks to their positions as needed, and so I don’t forget what I’ve already planted where! The main aim is to create a successional rota of colour between these and the rest of the plants in the garden.

Next up in my summary of the entries at this year’s @rutlandflowershow come the Small Show Gardens. At just 3x5m in size, these really do show just how much you can fit in a small space if you’re clever with the design, bringing inspiration for everyone. Whether you’re redeveloping an awkward corner in a larger space, or this is the entirety of your garden, courtyard, or balcony space, there will almost certainly be takeaway ideas for you here.
.
Thanks to this year’s fabulous Small Show Garden designers:

It was a pleasure last week to revisit a garden I designed in 2024 and where we completed phase 1 planting at the end of 2025. In a 2 hour garden coaching session, we assessed how things have fared over this challenging summer (which was surprisingly well!) and made plans for moving/replacing specimens to fill in any gaps. One of the challenges has been to reclaim the Crocosmia corms that the local squirrels have managed to spread out across the garden. Thank goodness they haven’t returned to find each one they stashed! 😅 Swipe to the end to see the before pics.

In the first of my posts celebrating the exhibitors who really make the @rutlandflowershow the success that it is, here are all of the Large Show Gardens that formed the heart of this year’s Show. (And yes, I did mean to post these sooner but I’ve no idea where the last 2 weeks have gone!). Not only were the gardens themselves inspirational, but so was the hard work and dedication that all of the teams brought to create them in very challenging heatwave conditions. This is a heartfelt thank you and well done to everyone involved:

All of these gardens measure just 8x8m, and just look at the range of potential there is for that space! Throughout my years as a design lecturer and now as a show judge, it never fails to impress me just how many different ways the same garden can be treated, no matter how large or small. I can’t wait to see what 2027’s Large Show Gardens bring!

🎟️ The Rutland Flower Show will return 20-22 August 2027, with Super Early Bird tickets going live on the website in October. by @ydsyvette

Back home now and reminiscing about the most fantastic weekend @rutlandflowershow. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat about your gardens! It was lovely to meet you all, and I just about managed to keep my voice through to the end 🤣 It’s truly a privilege to be one of the Show Ambassadors for this event which is fast becoming a real jewel in the horticultural show calendar. There are far too many highlights to fit in one post, so stay tuned for more in the coming days!
.
Of course thank you to the whole Show team for putting on such a great show in only our second year, thank you to all of our wonderful exhibitors (more to come on those later), and most of all thank you to my family for being my pillars of support before, during, and after the Show. There was so much interest in the Design Clinic, chances are you had a chat with my parents while you were waiting or if I was away from the stand. I can’t thank them enough! …My other half also did an excellent job of keeping the Demo Stage up and running, but he won’t thank me for highlighting his input 🤭

After an an amazing first day @rutlandflowershow we’re back for Day 2! If you’re coming this weekend you’re in for a real treat. Our show gardens and borders are absolutely amazing this year. Our exhibitors have all worked incredibly hard in incredibly challenging conditions with the hot weather, and they’ve really pulled it out of the bag.

There are also over 50 independent nurseries for you to ask advice and buy plants from, including specialist growers who have varieties that are very difficult to find elsewhere.

I’m running my FREE Garden Design Clinic in the Floral Marquee, so I’ll be ready and waiting to answer all your gardening questions. From how to start designing your space to advice on existing plans, overcoming planting or soil problems, material advice, where to plant those new plants you’ve just purchased from our fabulous nurseries… you can ask me anything! I’ve also got a wide range of material samples for you to explore to see what’s right for you.

On Sunday at 12pm I’ll be in the Rutland Garden Theatre talking about all things paving to help you make the best choices for your garden if you’re laying new surfaces. I’ll give you the ‘Perfect Paving Formula’ to work out exactly what’s right for you and your garden before you go ahead with purchasing what is usually the most expensive element of any garden makeover.

Finally, I’m running an exclusive show offer on all of my Garden Coaching vouchers: 10% off their usual prices PLUS all expiry dates will be extended to Christmas Day 2027; perfect for that alternative Christmas gift! Visit the stand to find out more.

I can’t wait to see you all there!

Last month saw the return of my annual Garden Design and Planting short course with @ntushortcourses. I spent the week taking the loveliest bunch of students through the garden design process, from beginner basics to producing professional plans by the end of the week. Our field trip this year was to the incomparable Chatsworth, where I tasked the group with comparing historic approaches to garden design with the more recent interventions that have been made there (which are so rare but refreshing to see at historic houses). Their main conclusion was that we work with the landscape so much more now, rather than trying to explicitly exert our control over it. One particular element I enjoyed was seeing waste material used to edge beds in the kitchen garden. Not only is this a great idea for growing drought tolerant species to attract pollinators, but it also gives the space a much more relaxed feel.
.
If you’re interested in learning how to design gardens with me, keep your eyes on my website (link in bio) for announcements on course dates for 2027.

The latest @stamfordandrutlandliving magazine is out, and Clare has found the perfect way to share a wide range of the wonderful things we have planned for this year’s @rutlandflowershow. It’s an honour to be included as one of the highlights, and I assure you Clare, the feeling is mutual. Throughout the many years I’ve been advertising with them, the whole team at Stamford and Rutland Living have been so supportive and they really make you feel like you’re one of the family. Now, as our Rutland Garden Theatre sponsors, they’re truly part of our Flower Show family. #rutlandflowershow #rutlandliving #rutland by @ydsyvette

@louisecrookendenjohnson is an award winning ceramicist who produces playful, characterful, and hopeful handmade pottery gifts from her studio in Kettering, Northamptonshire. The work blends a 1970s retro style inspired by children's picture books with a modern twist.

Each piece is hand-cut from white earthenware clay, slab-built, and individually hand-painted using vibrant Majolica glazes.

We're delighted Louise is with us and you can see more of her work in our Grand Marquee this August!

Don't forget, Early Bird Tickets end on 31 July!
