A Friend—-> these 2, Bugs @rabbitbartholomew and @buzzykerbox 2 guys who left a memorable hand print on the sport of surfing while they were in the mist of it. Man where do you begin with Bugs🤷‍♂️ definitely one of the major players in making pro surfing into what it is today. Anyone who’s anybody can tell you right where they were when the surfer magazine came out with Rabbit standing there doing his best Mick Jagger interpretation, with the quote Were Busting Down the Doors! And they sure Did💪🏻 and Buzzy was right there in the mix a top ten guy who had a really cool style and surfed Rad as well. First met Buzzy in 1976 we had a mutual friend who lived right on the break wall at Maalaea. We had just came in from a surf, kicking back resting up to go back out. He was telling me yeah just working for my Dad trying to Hustle up enough money to get to the next contest.i didn’t see him again till I opened up a GQ magazine in the early 80’s and Buzzy is front an center in a Polo Ralph Lauren ad. Went what🤷‍♂️ guess a Big time fashion photographer @bruce_weber was looking through a surfer magazine saw Buzzy and went wow he’s got a great look! Called the magazine got Buzzy’s contact and the rest is history. Buzzy said yeah I use to tell the guys at Ralph Lauren can you try and plan the photo shoots when there isn’t a surf contest 😂 by @yeahphillie

Jack—-> The giver! I don’t know Jack very well, yet u don’t have to he’s the people’s Champ! I like many others fell Big time in Love with his music when it came out. Funny story Jack was in collage in my hometown Santa Barbara. And was studying film, he was involved in making a surf movie September sessions and he dropped a couple of his songs on the movies soundtrack and as they say, the rest was history. Jack and his crew @lazyeyephone and @brushfirerecords are well known for their generosity, every tour of theirs they always give away a nice portion of the shows profits in the city that they play in. Read that to date they have given away over 40 million dollars to the less fortunate. Tho giving is not only about money @jackjohnson is also very generous with his time. Above I was going to my jobsite in Montecito and Jack ran by me with a Wavestorm under his arm to get a few, he just played the night before in town. I got out of my car seeing he was in a hurry, said hey Jack hate to ask you this, have a good friend who lives out of state that’s a huge fan, she’s trying to make your concert in October at the county bowl in Santa Barbara. Would you mind saying hi real quick, he smiles and says of course, what’s her name, That’s Jack 4 ya😎 by @yeahphillie

AGING—-> never gave it as much thought as I have the last 10 years or so. First have to make peace with the one looking back at you in the mirror 😂 then you start to go over the real nuts and bolts ie how are you holding up. In my case I need to fall on my face everyday and Thank the Good Lord cause I sure don’t deserve how well I am doing, have some buddies who say oh you just wait 😩ran into the Legend above Andy Neuman a Santa Barbara icon at the ymca yesterday. I was on the row machine getting after it💪🏻 he goes looking Good, I go not as good as you. He will be 80 soon I am not 70 yet. Andy is a guy who surfed his tail off and still does, yet differently..he used to be in the Santa Barbara surf club way back in the day, and they had Hollister Ranch access and in those days, ur getting epic waves with often no one out. Then of course he buys a parcel there when it was next to nothing. Andy and I are talking stories as I row. Saying u know ills hit you like a ton of brinks! Said out of no where I got a blood clot in my leg that ended up being really serious! Was out of the water seemed like forever. Was telling me about some other health issues. Was saying Andy aren’t you late for dinner ur kinda freaking me out. We sign off throw 🤙 and my take away, don’t trip on how your looking sure try your best to age gracefully but Man! Pay attention to your body Diet, Sleep, exercise. That’s the real pay dirt and pay Heeps of attention to where your going spiritually, cause that’s really the Million dollar Baby🙏 by @yeahphillie

Times—-.> on my walk tonight in Newport Beach all kinds of memories surfaced. All my kids surf contests the many people I have met throughout the years. Ended up working a fair bit down here from all the folks I had met. Have tried not to leave Santa Barbara to work out of town anymore tho I have one client The Hurleys that dang don’t ever think I could stop working at their casa. This is my 10th year, we always plan it when they’re out of town, they flip me the keys and say enjoy your working vacation. My boys live down here, so I get cooked for or taken out to dinner. That said getting some steps in and was checking the surf as well and out Pops a dear friend of mine/ours @brophybd known him since my kid left the team manager job at RVCA he took over and I always made it a point to drop into the RVCA HQ when I was in town. A neat little friendship developed that has only grown stronger throughout the years. Watched this guy catch a wave and went seriously is that Brophy. He came in and I snuck up behind him, Yo Cuz🤣 we chopped it up and he said tell Spencer my boy we got the photo tonite. I laughed and pulled out my phone and I never usually walk with my phone. Yet guess God knew I was gonna have a moment 🙏🙌🏻 by @yeahphillie

Community—-> you often hear it takes a village. Be it a Sports Game, building a business and especially raising a family. Yet sadly now, so many slip through the cracks. The reasons are many the book Fatherless America opened my eyes even wider than I thought they were. Above is that now popular Foster kid Kennedy today is her 17th year on earth. Been a tough go for many of those 17 years. What’s crazy is Calif has about 40,000 kids in foster care right now. I have often read the Bibical scripture Isaiah 1:17 where Jesus says I will care for the orphans and the widows. For some reason this kid came into my flight path and I decided to just lend a helping hand. Man! Had no idea that so many folks would come beside me on this little journey. Shared with a few of my clients about Kennedy and that we were trying to buy her a car, which you can see above we were able to. One of my clients walked out with 500 cash and said thx for making it so easy to help. Another good friend who just recently lost her husband to cancer saw an earlier post and said I got some dough for Kennedy’s ride🙌🏻 introduced her to a buddy of mines wife and she calls me saying hey just want you to know me and Kennedy have been spending some time together ❤️My son started a non profit recently and this is what we are stepping into. We have a Big vision in the works right now in Santa Barbara. A community center called The Third Place where the youth can gather and develop a plan to take on a really challenging world. Couldn’t imagine being a teenager in today’s world. To all of you who reached out and not only to help buy Kennedy a car, but to give her a hope that mankind hasn’t completely lost its way. I, we say Thank You🙏

Day Of—-> Birth! Well it was on this day a Legend was born. The surf world should stop in a moment of silence to recognize what a gift we were given. @curfuffle is a thing of beauty such a silent presence one who prefers to use the back door rather than the front. When The Search for Tom Curren came about surfers were calling in sick to plant themselves in front of the VCR and hang on everyone of his faded bottom turns or his ridiculous tube riding!! I have been blessed to of shared some good times with Tom and the Curren’s throughout the years the Currens were even our landlords 🙏but man so many of those early days with Dana McCorkle, Andy and Tim Smalley and that lucky little bugger @jimmymetyko.gallery who got to capture so many of those memorable moments. Tom just has this special way of being there without ever been seen showing up. To that, Cheers to Tom and his family on his day of birth ❤️😎 by @yeahphillie

Reach Out——> Dang I don’t know what’s come over me. I just been experiencing this deep need to reach out, an see if I can make any contribution whatsoever to someone that’s less fortunate than me. It doesn’t make me Good, but it does fulfill. And I have yet to meet a man that is not in search of meaning. The Lord puts a burden or a weight on your Heart ❤️ often when he wants to send you in that direction. I have gotten several, sometime i abide the calling other times I deny 😢 been on a little mission for the last few months with that Foster kid. Sure in this case I stepped into it full press, and i know why. I know her pain and i felt led to try and comfort or at least help her better understand why. Not that I had any real answers other than Trust God, since he delivered me from my mirey pit. How could I not say then why not you also. Man!! The lessens and things I have been shown in this have been Crazy. Haven’t cried so much in years!! Guess maybe seeing her go through so many of the same things that I had to experience. Have spoken in depth now with the ghost writer who’s writing my what I call a motivational memoir.. saying it’s no accident that this kid arrived in my Life at just this time and place🙌🏻 and then out of no where he brings a good buddy of mine’s wife into the fold who has a deep passion for ones that are hurting. And she so gently said I would love to step into this if you need a helping hand. On the phone with her just yesterday and after hanging up I burst into tears! Crying out to God you always seem to do this, when we are in the middle of the battlefield you send in the Calvery 🙏❤️ by @yeahphillie

Fathers—-> Be good to your Daughters , the above Kennedy is not my daughter tho I wish she was. She’s a 16 year old girl who’s paying a heavy price that’s not her cross to bear. She was the first one to wish me Happy Fathers Day. Saying thanks for caring about me, I know I still have much to learn I am trying my best to navigate this thing called life even when I feel so overwhelmed. Thank you for seeing more in me than just my struggles, and for reminding me that my past and other peoples options don’t define me or who I am. Thank you for all your Love, Prayers and support means more than I can explain. I know I have to put in the work just like you did to rise above your circumstances, which were a lot like mine when you were young. But it helps knowing I have someone who believes in me and chooses to walk beside me in this. I Love you and I am really Grateful to have you in my life. You are truly one of the Biggest Blessings I have ever received, everyone should have a Phil. Written as Kennedy sits in a Foster Farm in her room in Santa Maria. Rell Knew—-> to just give! You do often hear people say that if they would win the lottery they would be really generous, idk if I believe that, generosity is a condition of your heart. One of the best examples my Mom ever instilled in me is to give to others. She said if you want a joyous Life try and make it about others! She was the most generous person i ever knew, and her highest paid job was 2 dollars an hour. I have come to realize that giving is a learned behavior. Money just makes you more of who you already are, if you smoke pot poor, u will just smoke more pot rich. Hey it’s not what you give, I look at my life as if I am just a distribution center, God makes deposits in it for me to just re- distribute them. In Starbucks today a young gal maybe 17-18 walk in she greets me with a huge smile Hi Sir! Taken back a bit I said hey a little summer job, says u bet just graduated from high school heading to UCLA to study economics. Then it just kicked in dang that’s awesome I said, started asking her about herself, boy u must be really driven💪🏻 goes yeah no tic tok for me I got Plans….. went outside for a bit thought about our little chat. Walked back in and said Wow was just giving a little thought to our conversation wanted to just commend you on your journey! She lit up like a Christmas Tree, and what did that cost me? Just a moment of my time to recognize a young life that chooses to rise above ❤️🙏 by @yeahphillie

Generational—-> was hanging with one of my kids in Newport last weekend and I clicked a pic of him and his daughter Rhythm And went WoW it seemed like just yesterday I was striking a pose with my firstborn, who is now almost 49 years old 😳

Haha—-.> i must be pretty leveled up then! I did 8 new cities in 9 years. SF, Seattle, La Jolla, Malibu etc. was crazy I would start standing in front of paint stores saying i would work for next to nothing then in the case of SF and Seattle I would be painting Mansions in no time. Guess you just call it a belief in one self. Now I base myself out of Santa Barbara but for some reason still work in a million different places, just arrived in Dana Point for a couple of jobs🤷‍♂️ basically my guys say we Go! They say hey Boss it’s like a paid vacation as I put them up in hotels wherever we go😎 by @yeahphillie

Times——> still haven’t got over sitting in my room often alone just rewinding times. Here’s one, maybe 2001 had just moved to Kauai was on our way to Molokai with my wife and 3 kids to work at a church stopped in Kauai to housesit a buddy’s house and never went to Molokai. A year later my marriage was broken and I kept the oldest son with me in Kauai. Dang went through some really good hard times, from living in a van to meeting some of the best people I have ever known. The above guy Casey Romo was one of the boys, often in the line up with Bruce and Andy. One day told me I got this thing I do when it’s Heavy either at Hanalei or their favorite spot, locals only breaks below sea level Andy and Bruce have some amazing clips there. Says I paddle out and wait for a macking set turn around and shove myself over the ledge pop up and say we’re good I can handle😂 most of the time i lived in Kauai I had a helper/ assistant Casey would pick up my kid from school take him surfing, help him with his homework just my all around Point-Man. After work my kid and I having dinner and goes Dad Casey’s crazy he tries to get me to paddle out in Nuts kind waves with him. 😂 yeah kid, he’s one of the Kauai Boyz🤙
