Trying to break music into discrete "eras" can be a fool's errand- music is a spectrum, its history a continuum of influence, inspiration and emulation. Even so, the passing of the great Sonny Rollins feels like the end of... Something. He was arguably the last living legend of jazz's "old guard," a colossus of the saxophone whose career and shadow stretch across genres and generations.
On a day off during the recording of "Get It Honest," I picked up a copy of "The Notebooks of Sonny Rollins," hoping to enlighten myself with the wisdom of the old masters. Rollins' notes on technique can be difficult to parse- written by and for one man in his own idiosyncratic shorthand- but the book reveals much of the man: his thoughts on philosophy and politics, his obsessive, ascetic pursuit of perfection, and above all his evident and earnest love of the saxophone as a conduit for joy. It closes with a mantra for all performing artists:
"No matter how you feel- get up, dress up, and show up."

If I've recently missed a call from you, here's why. Meet Oliver, born a few weeks ago with minimal fuss (at least as far as births go). I consider myself very fortunate to be able to take family leave as we bond with our new baby and adjust to life as a family of four. That said, I did have to mute a few band grouptexts to keep the FOMO to a minimum.

This has been a strange month. We lost a couple of all-timers in my grandmother and our dear friend Shelley. I know it'll become more commonplace as I get older, but I'm still at an age where two funerals in a week is a lot to process. I've been trying to get back on the blog horse lately, so I put everything I have to say about it over on therevivalists.com/blog. I'll put the link in my bio as well. With tour winding down for a few months, I'm thinking a lot today about how fortunate I am to be able to take music all over the world- and to let it take me everywhere, too. I'm thankful to visit so many places, forge friendships, and dance with strangers in the bright lights. I'm lucky to get to go out and do what I do, and I'm blessed to have such a wonderful family to come back home to.

What if the real tour was the friends we made along the way? Hitting the road with @theheadandtheheart was the most fun I've had in a long time. Maybe ever. I can't believe it's already over, and I can't wait to get back out there, but also I kind of never want to leave home again? Anyway. That was this tour.

Had an absolute ball in Atlanta last night doubling up with my dear friend @thisisbradwalker. I'm off for the next few @therevivalists shows, so Brad will be covering (and crushing) for me while I'm away, but I'm grateful we got to do this one together. Now bring on all the jokes about "unprotected group sax..." I've heard 'em all.
