Last week was quite the roller coaster. To win a James Beard Award in national category is something I’m still wrapping my head around. My whole life many of the people that have inspired me and inspired LOMA, the working class minorities who put their head down and work everyday, never get recognized for their work, so in a way I feel like we represent the dreams of those people before us and around us. That’s what made this one so special. We say this all the time but although our people may lack the resources, connections, and exposure, we have the creativity, culture and grit, and love. When we built LOMA it felt so right, personal and authentic to who we are, that I felt ready to just open the doors and let things play out however they would. The reception and support from our community has been so amazing and heartwarming to say the least. To our guests and friends, I hope that through our service we’re able to return even a bit of the love you’ve given us. I can’t explain how proud I am of our team and family. I feel lucky to be on a team lead by my friend Leishla and watch her get that medal and that moment on stage she so deserves. I’ve seen her and women (especially of color) just like her belittled as too ambitious or out of their league for having the talent, audacity and the highest standards. Leish has the highest standards, talent and work ethic. She’s every bit of LOMA and I’m so happy to see her work culminate in a national award. Among many things, Osman spearheaded the feeling, the music, brand, and the sensibilities of LOMA. Os has been the glue to so many moving parts that make the experience at LOMA. And yet he just cares about being better tomorrow. Thank you Os for all you do. If you’ve ever walked into LOMA and felt welcomed, it probably started with Adam. Just the kindest, most caring human. Always there to make sure everyone is taken care of the best way possible every single night. Thank you to the James Beard Foundation @beardfoundation for this honor. Being named Best New Bar in the country is a surreal moment for us because LOMA is us all of us on this stage. For the last year, we’ve worn every hat imaginable. We work every day, fixe broken equipment, answer emails at midnight, take our daughter to school, and then turn around and welcome guests with a smile. Like so many small businesses, there was never anyone waiting in the wings to save us if things didn’t work out. We come from immigrant and working class families and were raised by people who taught us the value of hard work, but also understood how dangerous it can feel to take a chance on yourself when failure isn’t just disappointing. it’s something we can’t afford. Opening LOMA felt like betting everything we had on an idea and ourselves. We knew a 16 seat bar wouldn’t make us rich but we do this because we believe in our traditions, we believe in the stories, and that the hospitality of our cultures deserve to be celebrated with pride. This award belongs to our families, whose sacrifices made these opportunities possible. It belongs to our team of five, who chose to believe in this dream even when it felt impossible. And it belongs to everyone who has ever wondered whether they were qualified enough, connected enough, or secure enough to pursue what they love. (sometimes) Courage is being terrified and doing it anyway. Thank you to our guests, our community in Providence, and everyone who has supported us along the way. And to every immigrant and working class kid watching tonight- there is room for your story at this table.
