First time seeing an Almabtrieb šŸ„šŸ””

At the end of summer, cattle are brought down from the Alpine pastures and back into the village, often decorated with flowers and bells. It’s a living local tradition with farmers, traditional dress, food, music, and a village market.

Also heard Alphorns live for the first time — huge wooden horns with no keys, played entirely through breath, lip tension, and natural harmonics. In the Karwendel valley, the sound was incredible.

A pilgrimage through modern design history.

Ando. Gehry. Hadid. Eames. Panton. Siza. Fuller. Prouvé… names I’ve heard for years, unfolding one after another at Vitra. There was an almost ceremonial feeling to finally encounter their work in physical space.

But Vitra’s real achievement may be the system around these masters.

Business funds collecting. Collections become archives. Archives feed museums and education. Architecture becomes experimentation. Experimentation creates new design.

All of it exists within one campus.

It made me think about what a company can become over time. Beyond making and selling products, it can preserve memory, produce knowledge, commission culture, and eventually become cultural infrastructure itself.

That might be the most impressive design at Vitra: not any single object, but the institution.

A few meters today. Maybe hundreds of kilometers tomorrow.

I had the chance to join the 10th anniversary summit of TUM Hyperloop in Munich — seeing the vacuum and superconducting prototypes, hearing the researchers explain their progress, and walking through the workshop and test tube.

The most fascinating moment was surprisingly simple: a track-switching test. The vehicle moved only a few meters.

But standing there, it was hard not to imagine a future where Munich to Frankfurt might take half an hour.

The future rarely arrives looking futuristic. Railways, metros, aviation — they all began as experiments full of uncertainty.

Today, teams in China, Germany and the Netherlands are still trying to turn Hyperloop from an idea into infrastructure.

I genuinely hope they keep going.

I’d love to ride one in my lifetime.

The Bay Area feels like a place where the future is constantly advertising itself.

Tesla. Cybertruck. Waymo. Robotaxi. AI companies on billboards. Autonomous cars quietly moving through ordinary streets.

What struck me wasn’t any single piece of technology.

It was how normal all of this already feels.

Most technologies arrive twice: first as something strange, expensive and slightly absurd — then again as infrastructure nobody thinks about.

Walking around San Francisco, I kept wondering:

Are we watching the future being invented here — or watching it become ordinary?

The Austrian mountain opposite Zugspitze turned out to be far more interesting than I expected.

A cowbell ā€œmusical score.ā€ A barefoot sensory trail. A giant artificial anthill. Forest periscopes. And viewpoints that somehow evoke both the Matterhorn and the Faroe Islands.

What I loved most was the design behind it all. The mountain isn’t treated simply as scenery, but as a place to touch, listen, play, observe and learn. If your legs run out of energy, there’s a cable car. Even getting here is surprisingly easy: DB connections from Germany can take you across the border without making the journey feel complicated.

Then there’s the mountain restaurant: beautifully plated food, surprisingly nostalgic prices.

Good infrastructure doesn’t compete with nature. Sometimes it simply gives more people a way to experience it.

A Saturday ride from Grafing to Ostermünchen.

Past fields at full speed, through quiet forests, and into a wonderfully random food map: curry rice balanced on a wooden post, a rare dragon fruit sighting, rows of roujiamo like a tiny matrix, French two-tone cookies, and Yosemite beef jerky.

Cycling has a funny way of changing scale. A train line becomes a landscape. Farmland becomes something you can smell. Lunch becomes a bench, a tree stump, or wherever you happen to stop.

Maybe that’s why I like moving through Bavaria on two wheels: not to arrive faster, but to notice more.

🚓 Taking on San Francisco’s legendary hills on two wheels šŸŒ‰

Victorian houses, the Palace of Fine Arts, the Vedanta Society’s Old Temple — an unexpected fusion of Indian temple architecture and the American Arts & Crafts movement — Chinatown’s food, familiar dialects and Chinese immigrant history, chess at the Mechanics’ Institute, the elevated Salesforce Park, AI ads everywhere, SFMOMA, sculptures scattered across the city, and WWII-era WPA murals hidden inside a post office.

And finally, the Golden Gate Bridge. 🚲

At Fort Mason Center, I stumbled upon a performance by renowned choreographer Jess Curtis, paying tribute to Gravity — blending acrobatics, strength, balance and audience interaction in the cold, damp Pacific wind.

San Francisco remains a wonderfully strange city: technology, art, architecture, immigration, history, and a touch of wildness somehow keep colliding around the next corner. 🌁

300 km on the road šŸš—
10 km on foot 🄾
15 km on my Brompton 🚲

Finally stepped out of the Mac screen and into Yosemite.

Names I’ve seen on my computer for years suddenly became real places:

Yosemite → El Capitan → Sierra

Hiked into the mountains in the morning, then unfolded the Brompton and rode through Yosemite Valley in the afternoon — past El Capitan, Half Dome, waterfalls and endless granite walls.

A real-life macOS pilgrimage šŸŽšŸ”ļø
