🌿 I want to share something that’s been a big part of our journey behind the scenes at The Yellow Barn Studio.
Like most candle makers starting out, I began with fragrance oils. Honestly, they’re easy to work with and they smell amazing. But the deeper I went into the research, the harder it became to ignore what’s actually in many of them — synthetic compounds, phthalates, chemicals that release into the air in your home every time you light a candle. That didn’t sit right with me.
I’ve spent a big part of my life working as an ecologist, and that shapes how I see everything, including this. Botanicals aren’t just pretty ingredients. Plants have spent millions of years developing these aromatic compounds, and they interact with our bodies in ways that a lab-created substitute simply can’t. There’s a reason people have turned to plant medicine, plant fragrance, and natural botanicals for centuries. Nature didn’t need improving.
So I’ve made the decision to move our entire signature candle collection to essential oils only. Every single one.
It’s taken more time and more research than I originally planned, and honestly that’s been a good thing. Each scent has been chosen deliberately, not just for how it smells, but for what it actually brings to your space and your health.

Driftwood.

Mandarin, cedarwood, petitgrain and black pepper — bright citrus settling into dry woods, green leaves and a little warmth.

Made with beeswax and pure botanical essential oils. No synthetic fragrance. Just a simple blend, made slowly and tested carefully here in Tasmania.

This one feels like the coast to me — weathered timber, salt air and sun-warmed skin.

Plants have been looking after themselves for a very long time. 🌿

Many aromatic herbs produce compounds as part of their own natural defence — and some of those aromas are also unappealing to certain insects.

It’s something I’ve been learning more about while developing Botanical Bodyguard, our outdoor candle made with citronella, lemongrass, marjoram, sweet basil and rosemary essential oils.

I love that the beautiful herbal scent isn’t an afterthought. It comes from the botanicals themselves.

A little bit of plant science behind something designed for picnics, camping, afternoons in the garden and simply spending more time outside.

Sometimes we spend so much time waiting for the “right” moment.

The right day.
The right time.
The right circumstances.
Tomorrow. Next week. When things are a little less busy…

I’ve decided I’m done waiting. 🌿

The Yellow Barn is something I’ve been genuinely excited and passionate about creating — and I don’t want to keep putting off something that brings me so much joy.

There’s only one reason I’m waiting a little longer to launch… we’re heading away for a month! 😂

But when we return, I’m launching. No more waiting for a better time. No more “one day”.

I’m so excited to finally share The Yellow Barn with you — the candles, the story, the beeswax, the botanicals and all the love (and a fair bit of science!) that has gone into creating them.

Sometimes the moment you’ve been waiting for is simply the moment you decide to stop waiting. 💛

I don’t want my children to only see the finished version of things.

I want them there while we’re figuring it out. Making things, growing things, getting it wrong, starting again and celebrating the little wins along the way.

Whether it’s life on the farm, building The Yellow Barn, cooking dinner or just getting through an ordinary Tuesday — I want them to feel like they’re part of it, not standing on the sidelines while the adults are busy.

Because one day they probably won’t remember everything we achieved.

But I hope they remember that they were included. That their hands helped. Their ideas mattered. And there was always a place for them beside us. 🤍
