The windows are still cracked from the night before, and you can hear the early birds chirping. The sun is already warming the home. You smell coffee, feel your dog at your feet, and it’s time to wake up.⁠

Seriously might be the coolest thing about our lil’ Tree House.🏡🪜🤎

The loft (and ladder) were a selling point for this home, but we had to figure out a way to make it easier to use, while still being safe. Initially it was on a rope pulley system, but this only shredded our hands, and that ladder is HEAVY.

Scott floated the idea of using a winch… and I didn’t hate it.

Our friend welded a custom bracket to support the winch, and now the loft ladder can be used anyone in the home — Lucy included! Plus, it’s a fun party trick, and our STR guests love it.🙂

We’ve settled back into routines, which feels nice (I think?). Even better, summer is still hanging around, so we spent most weekends chasing the warmth and dipping our toes in the big lake as much as possible. And of course, our gorgey foster girl Sweet Pea stole our hearts — and everyone else’s.

10+ years with our plant pocket. I thought I would be more sad, but I suppose it goes to show that I’m ready for a fresh start.

It’s been 3 years since we installed our stand alone fireplace. I mean, is it even The Red House without it?

After purchasing the home in 2023, we planned for for the fireplace. We measured down to the 1/4″ to ensure proper clearances around it for the big sliding door. We adjusted walls, cabinets and future furniture layouts for it. In short, we considered the fireplace in every single decision we made until it was installed. So. Many. Micro. Decisions.

Can’t stop won’t stop using this slick walnut hardware. (You’ve seen this in our Red House kitchen, too!) Inspired by midcentury homes that focus on bringing the outdoors in, this hardware allows the wood tone to shine, exuding warmth and comfort. This wall is SO close to being complete, just need to check a few more items off the list before the full reveal!🤎

And a few notes!👇️⁠

Our painting is approximately 3’ x 4’, meaning we could get one long side and one short side from an 8’ board.⁠
⁠
Choose a nicer wood for the frame (your 1x2), such as select oak, walnut or maple. Scoop up the cheapest pine you can find for the canvas backer!⁠
⁠
A wrapped canvas will rarely be perfectly square. Slight imperfections in the 1/4” float of your frame is totally normal. ⁠
⁠
That said, you can add additional screws along the lengths of pine to stretch and pull the frame of the canvas taught, making it as square as possible.⁠
⁠
Next on the list: hardware, styling, and then... we may actually call this built-in wall complete! If you give this DIY a try, let me know! ⁠
