Introducing The Platform Crew Coaches:

Ian Tibbs (@yenlifts)

Ever since I was young I’ve had a passion teaching and watching others grow. With being introduced to powerlifting early on in university I found myself very interested in learning about the ins and outs of powerlifting programming. After spending a few years in the sport and learning everything I could along the way I decided to invest a bit more into learning what it may take to be a powerlifting coach beginning with the yardcat mentorship ran by Integrated Strength and Sincere Training Systems. Since then I fell in love with the process after realizing how little I really knew at the time. Back in 2022, I was lucky enough to work with my first athlete and since then with continuing my education as a coach I have been blessed to work with more and more athletes to where we are today. In 2021, I was also given the opportunity to represent McMaster Barbell while finishing my last year of school as club president. To this day I’m looking to continue to grow my roster and deepen my understanding of what truly makes a great coach beyond just the surface level qualities.

TPC ATHLETE RECAP ⇩

@gabbyslifts competed at the 2026 NAPF Regional Powerlifting Championships, having her first opportunity to represent team Canada on the international stage. Gabby ended the day going 3/3 on squats with 227.5kg (+5kg), 3/3 on bench with 125.5kg (+5.5kg), and 3/3 on deadlifts with 240kg (+5kg), totalling 593kg (+20.5kg), placing first in the open 84+kg class on what was simply a perfect day.

I truly don’t think this day could have gone any better. Coming into this meet Gabby was projected first by a comfortable margin so the goal on the day was more or less to go out there, see what we can total, and just have a blast being able to represent Canada.

With this being my 8th meet working with Gabby where she’s managed to PR her total every single meet, we’ve truly learned what it takes to continue to make progress in training and show up strong on the platform. The one lift that truly blew my expectations on the day was bench. Coming into the meet, Gabby missed her last heavy single of 127.5 which would have been a 5kg ATPR. While on the day 125 would have been the safer bet, missing this left a bit in the air of what she’d be able to hit on the platform, but on the day, knowing 125kg was the current NAPF bench record, we decided to cap her out at 125.5kg to hopefully secure that record. With all that being said, the 125.5kg NAPF bench record was secured and it absolutely flew on the day with at least 2.5-5kg left in the tank. Outside of bench it was just the perfect day for squat and deadlift, unlocking that 500lbs/227.5kg squat for the first time and finally getting an attempt at 240 making it move comfortably.

Each meet Gabby continues to close the gap on the 600kg total and I’m damn confident come Nationals 2027 we’ll blow the 600kg out of the water.

TPC Athlete Highlights #4

@tazkarjipl 180kg/397lbs (5kg ATPR)
Starting the last heavy week before centrals on the best possible note. Training since Ibrahim’s first meet has been as smooth sailing as it could be. Very excited to see what he can do at centrals.

@kilo_.jules 80kg/176lbsx1 (2.5kg ATPR)
HUGE win with this bench PR. Earlier in the summer as Jules transitioned into a full time job and other life things getting in the way training was quite underwhelming. After some discussion and reworking her training to better accommodate for her new schedule, training began to pick up back to normal leading to an extremely rewarding PR.

@amberbolic 62.5kg/128lbsx4 (2.5 kg 4s PR)
Bench has been extremely finicky to get going lately for Amber where the week prior to this lift the day ended with a failed topset of 61x4. A common trend through the block was simply that most sessions felt heavy and she wasn’t feeling recovered throughout the week. With this in mind we opted to changed around the rep scheme for the final week of the block and managed to come into this session feeling a lot more confident leading to a much better outcome then the week prior.

@gabbyslifts 122.5kg/270lbsx1 (2.5kg ATPR)
Gabby’s bench continues to make progress as we’ve been running the same setup for a while now as it continues to pay off. As we’re moving through prep into NAPFs weights continue to trend upward and I can’t wait to see what she’ll put together on the platform.

@natsnotnatty 125kg/275lbsx1 (2.5kg ATPR)
The 2x per week split continuing to show great success with the squat gains. Keeping the squat setup relatively similar across the past couple blocks but simply focusing on pushing the needle forward with the intensity for both sessions has just allowed us to PR block after block.

ENHANCING COMMUNICATION

Communication between a coach and an athlete will always be one of the most important aspects to help continue progressing in the sport.

However, knowing how to communicate with your coach will only make things easier for both parties.

From a coaches perspective, have you provided your athlete with the knowledge to communicate properly? From an athletes perspective, have you considered everything that could lead to a potential drop in performance?

@caitlyn.mak being able to watch you compete in the morning then hearing you cheer me on for my session made the day all the better, I love you🫶

@thepowerliftingprofessor for getting my back in a state where I can train comfortably without feeling like I’m gonna explode. The man knows what he’s doing and the work he puts in really showsšŸ¤

@tibbsy55 for driving out to handle me on the day. It’s always a blast being in the warmup room with the stronger TibbsšŸ§™ā€ā™‚ļø

Athlete Highlights #3

260kg/573lbs x3 (10kg triple PR) @bjonespower
Wrapping up the first block post nats with a substantial 10kg triple on pulls. Brennan’s deadlift has always responded well to pushing some decent weight on his secondary day earlier in the week where the week he pulled this 260 triple he also hit a substantial volume PR with 240 for a 4x3. Knowing this the plan will be to just continue pushing these with some proper pacing and letting the PRs happen.

75kg/166lbs x2 (2.5kg double PR and comp PR match) @kilo_.jules
Bench has always been Jules’ most finicky lift to see some consistent progress but I think we’re really starting to hit our stride here. Given Jules is extremely consistent with her bench tech across sessions alongside a relatively small ROM in her press, we decided to lean into pushing a higher average intensity across her sessions in the week and it has shown some very strong results.

109kg/240lbs x1 (15lb single PR) @tazkarjipl
Just a beautiful way to end this pivot block into centrals prep. With how well Ibrahim’s first meet went, there hasn’t been many significant programming changes that led to this PR. Mainly just pacing his previous bench day to make sure he’s coming into this day feeling fresh has continually allowed him to hit bench PR after bench PR.

120kg/264lbs x 1 (2.5kg single PR) @natsnotnatty
A weight I know damn well she could have taken for a while it was extremely rewarding to see Nat smoke 120kg for a new PR. Being someone with an extremely busy schedule outside of lifting, only being able to get 2 sessions in a week it has taken a lot of tinkering to push the needle forward.

270kg/595lbsx3 (10kg triple PR) @kevinliang53
After a couple blocks being slowed down with some sickness following another block just to get things a bit more back to speed, Kevin ended this block wonderfully taking 10kg over his comp PR and 2.5kg under his ATPR for a pretty smooth triple.

TPC ATHLETE RECAP ⇩

@bjonespower competed at 2026 CANPL Nationals going 3/3 on squats with 240kg (+15kg PR), 2/3 on bench with 152.5kg (+7.5kg PR), and 3/3 on deadlifts with 280kg (+10kg PR) totalling 672.5kg (+32.5kg) making his first nationals appearance.

This being Brennan’s first nationals along with making his way back to 93kg, the main goal of the day was simply just to see how much we can put on the total while also trying to breach the 93kg qualifying total given that he qualified from the 83kg total back at centrals. With that in mind the day went very well outside of a missed third attempt bench.

This prep for the most part went pretty perfect for Brennan. Addressing some squat tech issues early on that would lead to some pretty drastic shift into his left side coming out the hole when things got heavy allowed for some consistent PRs across the blocks of prep. Ending prep with 230 for a PR single at around an RPE 8 definitely built the confidence to load 240 on meet day where even that moved with around 5kg left in the tank. After hitting 160kg for an ATPR on bench about a block out from the meet, things ended up falling a bit flat on the day, taking 152.5kg on the second leading to a missed 157.5kg on his third. Deadlifts were just beautiful on the day, ending prep with a RPE 8-9 272.5kg pull set Brennan up very well for the day taking 280kg for the third pull, where I honestly don’t know how he held on but I won’t complain.

As we’ve got some time until his next meet the plan is to just continue to fill out 93kg and get some good training under our belt.
