Worried your whole or permanent life insurance might affect your Medi-Cal eligibility? 🤔

Here’s the key fact you NEED to know: If you’re only the insured and NOT the owner of the policy, it won’t count against your asset limit! ✅

Protect your benefits and stay informed as California reinstates the Medi-Cal asset test in 2026.

⚠️ Medi‑Cal Asset Limits Returning in CA
Effective Jan 1, 2026

Medi‑Cal will re‑impose asset limits for non‑MAGI eligibility groups (e.g., those over 65 or disabled)

Retirement accounts and life insurance cash values will both be counted toward those limits—though withdrawals remain income, not assets.

➡️ Retirement Accounts
Retirement accounts (such as IRAs, 401(k)s, and similar pension plans) are generally counted as assets for the Medi-Cal asset test, unless they are in "pay status"—meaning the applicant is receiving regular, periodic payments of principal and/or interest from the account. If a retirement account is not in pay status, its full value is typically counted toward the asset limit.

If a retirement account is in pay status, only the payments received are counted as income, not the principal balance

➡️Life insurance policies are treated differently depending on their type and value:

Term life insurance (which has no cash surrender value) is not counted as an asset.

Whole or permanent life insurance policies with a cash surrender value are counted as assets if the total face value of all policies exceeds $1,500. If the combined face value is $1,500 or less, they are exempt from the asset test.

If the face value exceeds $1,500, the entire cash surrender value is counted toward the asset limit

💍 Wedding planning got expensive fast? Before you tap into your retirement accounts, watch this! ⛔️

Pulling from your 401(k) or IRA could cost you a 10% early withdrawal penalty plus income taxes 😩

👉 If you need extra cash, your brokerage account is the smarter move:
✅ No age restrictions
✅ No early withdrawal penalties
✅ Pay lower long-term capital gains taxes if you’ve held investments for 1+ year

💡 Pro tip: Always protect your future while planning for your big day 🫶

📢 The Costly Mistake of Gifting Property Too Soon! 🏡

Did you know that how you transfer a property to your child can make a huge difference in taxes? Here’s why inheriting a property is often more tax-efficient than receiving it as a gift while parents are still alive.

👉 If You Gift the Property While Alive:
The child receives the property at the original purchase price (cost basis). If they decide to sell, they could owe a large amount in capital gains tax on the appreciation!

👉 If the Child Inherits the Property:
Thanks to the step-up in cost basis, the property’s value is reset to its fair market value at the time of the parent's passing. This significantly reduces or eliminates capital gains tax if they sell the property soon after.

🔹 Example:
▫️ Mom & Dad buy a home in 1980 for $100K.
▫️ In 2025, the home is worth $800K.
▫️ If they gift it to their child while alive, the child keeps the $100K cost basis. Selling it for $800K means $700K in taxable gains!
▫️ If the child inherits it instead, the cost basis steps up to $800K. Selling it for $800K means $0 in taxable gains!

💡 Moral of the Story: Before gifting real estate, consult a financial professional to avoid unnecessary taxes! ✅

💼 Thinking of naming a trust as the beneficiary of your retirement account? ⚠️ Think again!

Trusts can trigger higher taxes, complex rules, and faster distributions—which means less money for your loved ones. 💸

For example,
A trust hits the top 37% tax bracket at just $15,200 of taxable income.

In contrast, individuals don’t hit the 37% bracket until over $609,350 (for single filers in 2024).

If income from a retirement account (like RMDs) is kept in the trust, it could be taxed at these steep rates.

However, if the trust distributes the income to beneficiaries, the income is taxed at their personal rates, which are usually lower.

✔️ Learn when a trust makes sense... and when it doesn’t.

📈 Knowledge = Power. Financial literacy = Freedom.
