The World Needs More Father. And I'm thankful to all the men I have had to chance to call friends and mentors..some I will never meet outside the page. Many I get to engage with regularly on the path each swinging the sword in our own respective arenas. Keep your heads up. You never know who is watching.

Robert Bly’s Iron John: A Book About Men argues that modern society suffers from an absence of active, engaged father figures and male mentors. Using the Grimm Brothers' fairy tale, Bly suggests that young men need initiation into adulthood—receiving guidance and emotional grounding from older men. The text emphasizes the importance of overcoming the lack of paternal guidance and the need for men to experience personal growth and overcome the limitations of modern life.

The "Wild Man": Bly uses Iron John to symbolize an archetype of grounded, healthy, and vigorous masculinity. This wild man lives in touch with the earth and instinct, which counters toxic, hyper-aggressive behavior.

Father Hunger: Bly points out that modern industrialization separated fathers from their daily work and families, leading to a void in mentorship. This leaves young men (and women too) searching for direction, a phenomenon he calls "father hunger".

Mentorship: True maturity cannot be learned from mass media or solely from a mother; it requires older, unrelated men or father figures to guide boys through life's challenges.

Seneca reminds us to choose our mentors wisely.

"Choose as a guide one whom you will admire more when you see him act than when you hear him speak...You can never straighten that which is crooked unless you use a ruler."

Happy Easter! Thankful for Spring and welcoming the transition to warmer days. Thankful for all these rains we've had since Phoenix's arrival which have nourished the lands and our time as new parents. (And made our yard glorious with little to no maintenance from yours truly). #Filmfriday in honor of returning to this beautiful city for @labiennale for third time since 2017 and 2009.

I was lucky enough to enjoy the art festival on my first trip, but this one will be special thanks to my copilot @hulahoophouse and having a quality amount of time to take in the city and #labiennale .

A first for the world's oldest art festival a majority of the artist are non-male and first-time representatives. Some of the questions and themes for 2022:

"How is the definition of the human changing? What constitutes life, and what differentiates plant and animal, human and non-human?”

“It is all about the two sides of existence of the future: the cyborgian side, and what that can accomplish without actually having human qualities, and humans who lack the capacity that A.I. can function with,” Leeson said. “It’s kind of like The Wizard of Oz, where you have these characters, and one doesn’t have a heart and one doesn’t have a brain, and they both feel inadequate. And it’s a matter that we need both, and one can’t be the master of the other. We need to collaborate with all systems that are alive on the planet in order to have a future.”

Other Themes: Surrealism, otherworldliness, and transformation beyond human forms, alternative ways of knowing, witches/spiritism, gender, indigenous viewpoint.

Sofia and I celebrated 3 months of married life with a few weeks in paradise thanks to our generous friends and family. We unplugged and basked in this milestone of commitment. Dancing, loving, talking, reading, walking, minds blown by this beautiful life we've chosen to build together.
