Close enough to the bustle
But a little outside of it
A space for our dreams to grow
A section set aside for my art
A yard for our dog
A quiet street

We went to sign papers
One day after work
Unceremonious,
But it was everything to us
The way a flower is everything
To a hummingbird flying by
The sun is there everyday
But to the leaves it gives life
The little things to me
Seeing your set of keys on the hallway table
Sitting next to you on a drive
How you always help me out
With a button in the back I can’t reach
Or an earring when I can’t see
Seeing your shoes next to mine near the door
All the little things
The individual flowers
That make a garden
Of our little life
In this corner of the world

I spent an afternoon with these two. Met them at their home. They had gone to their local government office to get married. Just them two, and later on we met up to take portraits of them to remember this time in their life. I got to hear their story, and their dreams. We drove all together around SF, I chauffeured them. I have a whole set of photos of him helping her with her dress, an earring, shoes, a sip, a man so attentive. And her, understanding, supportive, and incredibly incredibly kind. They were so free. At one point they even got mud on their clothes, and just laughed it off, and we just washed it off. Since they never got to do vows, we ended it at the coast with letters they had written to each other, not written in a voice knowing there would be an audience also listening in, but incredibly raw and personal. We got sun, wind, and clouds. Mixed in with love and contentment. A recipe for an amazing day.

Isn’t it strange how a familiar song or a passing scent can take us back to a moment we haven’t thought about in years?

I think about that evening on the California coast sometimes.

The way the sky slowly faded from soft pink to deep violet. The last bit of sunlight disappearing into the Pacific, and a tiny crescent moon quietly finding its way into the evening sky.

I remember watching them run barefoot along the shore, spinning, laughing, dancing, with her wedding dress trailing through the ocean water. Seagulls flying past us and disappearing into the last light of the day.

Some of our most precious memories are made in just a few fleeting minutes. So full of life, so free, and then they’re gone before we even realize it.

But somehow, they find their way back to us. Through an old photograph, a little video we took without thinking, or a song we haven’t heard in years. And suddenly, we’re there again. The same ocean, the same purple sky, the same laughter carried by the wind.

Maybe that’s what I love most about what I do. Being there for these fleeting moments, and getting to hold on to a little piece of them long after they’ve passed.

And perhaps, years from now, all it will take is a familiar song to bring me back to this evening. "人生是旷野" 🤍

One of our favorite things about photographing an elopement is getting to slow down.

We traveled to Amangiri for this one, and instead of fitting photographs into the pace of a traditional wedding day, we had time to explore with them, pay attention to the changing light, and create an experience that felt meaningful in itself.

And at Amangiri, the landscape really does become part of the wedding. The architecture disappears into the desert, with miles of open Plateau surrounding it and Lake Powell just beyond. We spent the day moving between the resort, the rock formations and the water, letting each place give us something different to work with.

There was room to experiment, to make photographs simply because we were inspired by what was in front of us, and also to put the cameras down for a minute and let them experience where they were.

That slower pace is something we love about destination elopements. It gives us the freedom to create beautiful photographs, but more importantly, to help make the day itself something worth remembering.

Carmel Wedding Weekend.

What it looks like when you give yourself over completely and trust in the vision.

From Eileen’s incredible design and execution, to the wonderful staff from Holman and of course catering, florals and the DJ’s party vibes to finally the visual documentation of it all through photo & video; this wedding is a thing of beauty and the perfect example of being in the moment and enjoying your closest friends and family.

@cindyzhangmusic sang her own song at her own wedding, guitar in hand, as the last of the early fall light started to leave the Carmel coast.

Somewhere between that, the veil catching the ocean wind, and a sunset that seemed to stay just a little longer than usual, this day felt entirely her.

And then came the second look — corset, sequins, red lips, and a completely different energy for the night.
