🏡 Marin YIMBY endorses Rachel Farac and Pat Eklund for Novato City Council!

Novato needs leaders who understand that addressing the housing shortage means both building more homes and protecting the people who already call our community home.

Rachel Farac recognizes that decades of underbuilding, restrictive land-use policies, lengthy approval processes, and high construction costs have made housing unaffordable. She supports clearer development standards, more predictable approvals, and partnerships to expand affordable and workforce housing.

Pat Eklund brings a long record of local housing and homelessness work. She helped lead Novato’s purchase of Marin Valley Mobile Country Club to preserve affordable housing for seniors, supported hundreds of affordable homes at Hamilton, and helped advance housing, shelter, and supportive services through partnerships with local organizations.

Both candidates recognize that Novato has a role to play in creating a community where working families, seniors, and essential workers can afford to live.

We’re proud to support Rachel Farac and Pat Eklund and their commitment to a more affordable, inclusive Novato!

🏡 Marin YIMBY endorses Brian Jaffe and Gareth Walter for Larkspur City Council!

Larkspur needs leaders who will turn housing plans into actual homes—and Brian Jaffe and Gareth Walter bring complementary approaches to getting that done.

Brian Jaffe brings direct experience in housing development and state housing policy. He supports expanding housing options, making approvals more predictable, reducing unnecessary discretionary review, and ensuring fees don’t make new homes infeasible.

Gareth Walter is focused on closing the gap between housing plans and housing production. He wants to track progress with a housing dashboard, recruit builders, address stalled projects, establish firm timelines, and remove unnecessary barriers that keep homes from getting built.

Both recognize that addressing Marin’s housing shortage means more than planning for homes on paper: it means creating a process that delivers them. We’re proud to support Brian and Gareth as they work toward a Larkspur where more people can afford to live in the community they call home.

Housing affordability isn’t just about the cost of building homes—it’s also about the cost of insuring them.

In California, wildfire risk and rising insurance costs are putting pressure on homeowners, renters, and housing providers alike. When insurance becomes unaffordable or unavailable, it can make homes more expensive to buy, build, and maintain, adding another barrier to housing affordability.

The Insurance Commissioner plays an important role in overseeing California’s insurance market and addressing these challenges.

We’re endorsing State Senator Ben Allen for Insurance Commissioner because making insurance more accessible and affordable is an important part of making housing more affordable across California.

🏠 Affordable housing needs a sustainable insurance market, too.

Pro-housing laws only work if they’re enforced—and Rob Bonta has made enforcement a priority.

⚖️ In 2021, Bonta established the Housing Strike Force, the first unit in the Attorney General’s office dedicated to holding cities accountable for violations of state housing law.

🏘️ His office has challenged local obstruction, from suing Huntington Beach over its resistance to state housing requirements to stopping Woodside’s attempt to block new homes by declaring itself mountain lion habitat.

📣 This summer, Bonta also warned Menlo Park that it couldn’t use legal loopholes to delay a major housing project.

California has passed important laws to help build the homes we need. We need an Attorney General who will make sure cities follow them.

That’s why YIMBY Action chapters across California are endorsing Rob Bonta for Attorney General!

California needs leaders who can turn housing goals into homes—and Fiona Ma brings financial and executive experience to that challenge.

In her questionnaire to YIMBY Action, Ma outlined several ways she would advance housing as Lieutenant Governor:

🏫 More student and faculty housing: She would use her role on the UC and CSU governing boards to advocate for faster development of campus housing, helping ease pressure on local rental markets.

💰 Affordable housing financing: She would build on her work as State Treasurer to ensure fiscal tools and tax credits continue to support affordable housing.

🏘️ Pro-housing local policies: She supports legislative reforms that reward cities for adopting pro-housing zoning.

🏗️ Lower construction costs: She would support reforms to reduce the cost of building new homes.

We’re proud to join YIMBY Action chapters across California in endorsing Fiona Ma. We look forward to working toward a California where more people can find an affordable home in the communities they love.

California needs millions of new homes—and we need a Governor ready to make housing production a priority.

In his questionnaire to YIMBY Action, Becerra committed to pursuing legislation to ensure state housing law applies in the coastal zone just like everywhere else. That matters for communities like Marin, where coastal rules can make it harder to build the homes people need.

Becerra has also laid out a housing agenda that includes:
🏘️ Legalizing more housing types, including duplexes, cottage courts, and small condos
⚡ Streamlining approvals with a proposed 90-day permitting deadline
🏗️ Enforcing state housing laws and holding cities accountable for meeting their housing goals
💰 Reducing construction costs and expanding funding for affordable homes
🚉 Supporting housing near jobs and transit

His proposals address the barriers that keep homes expensive and out of reach for too many Californians.

We’re proud to join YIMBY Action chapters across California in endorsing Becerra and look forward to seeing housing production and affordability treated as statewide priorities.

We’re proud to endorse Jared Huffman for California’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes all of Marin County.
We were particularly encouraged by his support for the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, a bipartisan federal housing package that expands affordable-housing financing and supports local housing strategies.
Huffman has also worked to bring federal resources directly to Marin’s housing needs, including funding and federal property transfers supporting affordable housing in West Marin and housing for people displaced from the Point Reyes National Seashore ranches.
Most recently, he secured $2 million for the Point Reyes Workforce Housing project and $250,000 for the Oak Hill Workforce Housing Project in Marin County.
Federal housing policy matters—and so does making sure federal resources reach the communities that need them. We appreciate Huffman’s work to support housing for the workers and families who struggle to afford to live in Marin.

We’re proud to endorse Marin County Supervisor Eric Lucan for California State Assembly in District 12. Eric has been a strong advocate for housing during his time on the Board of Supervisors, including his work on Marin’s inclusionary zoning ordinance and HCD-compliant Housing Element.
We’re especially encouraged by his commitment to finding new ways to get housing built. If elected, Eric has pledged to unlock the financing pipeline for housing and bring back redevelopment agencies through tax increment financing, while also supporting condo defect reform to help reduce the cost of building housing.
As Marin Magazine has noted, Eric is “one of the most visible champions of housing projects on the Board of Supervisors” and “a strong advocate for permanent supportive housing for the homeless and other vulnerable populations.”
We’re excited to support Eric and look forward to working with him to build a more affordable Marin! 🏠

🏡 A great afternoon talking about housing in Marin!

Yesterday, we joined the Community Housing Forum, organized by @callmarinhome, @greenbeltalliance, the @marincommunityfdn, and @college_of_marin. The event brought together community leaders and housing advocates to discuss issues relating to housing in Marin.

The first panel, moderated by Mario Ernesto Lopez, featured Cassandra Benjamin of the Marin Community Foundation and Jarrod Russell of the Community Land Trust Association of West Marin (CLAM). They discussed lessons from housing efforts in West Marin, particularly for ranch workers and their families during periods of displacement.

The second panel, moderated by Lizzy Stahl, featured Maureen Sedonaen of Habitat for Humanity and Amanda Brown-Stevens of Greenbelt Alliance. The conversation focused on Propositions 1 and 43, two statewide measures on the November ballot with significant implications for housing funding and local government revenue.

A big thank you to all the organizers, panelists, moderators, and everyone who came out to participate in these important conversations. It was great to see so many people engaged in the future of housing in Marin! 🏘️💚
