Family photographs became the starting point for In Translation, Yi Nan Kang’s thesis collection at Parsons School of Design. Drawing from experiences growing up between Chinese and American cultures, the collection explores a hybrid “third identity” shaped through language, family, and belonging. When I was 9 years old I dreamt that I would become a fashion designer 🌟Here I am almost 1.5 decades later and I’m only at the beginning of my long journey. I’m so thankful to everyone I’ve met at Parsons and my friends who have always supported me and our seemingly endless 12+ hour days and all nighters. We made it! by @yinanagon

LOOK 6 from IN TRANSLATIONMing in my bubbled lace top and puff skirt set. This look was sponsored by @solstissusa and I hand dyed the lace to a beautiful periwinkle color. The skirt has hand felted polka dots to match and lace appliqué cutouts hand sewn on the top. LOOK 5 from IN TRANSLATION:Tenny in my floral appliqué top paired with a screen printed train skirt. The florals on the top were painted over embossed fabric and frayed at the edges. Introducing Yi Nan Kang (Parsons ‘26), one of the 20 emerging designers showcasing their work in the ‘26 BFA runway!Yi Nan Kang’s collection “In Translation” explores what it means to grow-up between two languages and two cultures, while navigating the line between belonging and unfamiliarity. Rooted in her experience as an American born Chinese designer, the collection examines how identity is shaped through translation and adaptation. Childhood photographs taken by her father from family road-trips across American national parks became metaphors for the immigrant experience. Dressed by her mother in bright polka-dots, stripes, and florals, she never blended in with her surroundings, despite wanting to.
