Here I am β˜€οΈ... My name is Yinga, I'm a violinist who was born and bred in Kingston, Jamaica. This is my take on Bob Marley and the Wailers' 'Sun is Shining'.

It felt so good to share this performance with the Future Roots crowd at Dubwise Cafe on April 25, 2025 🫢🏾 Trained in classical music here in Jamaica, it was only natural for me to blend my roots with my instrument - growing up well immersed in sound system culture and Jamaican rhythms, eventually I found my way to playing it on my violin.

Photos from The 27th Annual Walter Rodney Lecture delivered by Seretse Small on Oct. 17, 2025

It was an insightful lecture delivered by my mentor and friend Seretse. One of the main ideas was tacit knowledge: the things that we know without saying or without being able to say it.

In his lecture, Seretse shared his experience working in music education with students who embodied African knowledge. They instinctively knew how to use drum patterns for certain social contexts. He argued that our economy could be more resilient if we embraced and revered the tacit knowledge of our people, especially in the creative sector.

My question to Seretse was, given that tacit knowledge is directly connected to heritage.. and given that our leaders have inherited a colonial system marked by exploitation and rebellion.. how do we get them to feel safe enough to empower the people?

His response was:

Uncle Rodney built my sound
That ugly system must go down.
Look at me, I wear my crown.
My sound so big, it weighs pounds.

It was a very inspiring evening and an excellent lecture. Looking forward to more like these @seretsesmall 🀍

First post-Melissa gig was for a gentleman named Ivan (no relation to Melissa) who celebrated his 80th Birthday yesterday!

Using this opportunity to encourage you to continue donating to relief efforts. At the end of this reel, you will see a QR code for donating to the State of Accompong in St. Elizabeth. The link is also in my bio.

Show this reel to a friend in real life to scan the code. The Maroon community in St. Elizabeth needs your support.

Stay resilient πŸ‡―πŸ‡²β€οΈπŸŒΏ

"If people only knew how hard I work to gain my mastery. It wouldn't seem so wonderful at all."
― Michelangelo

While it is important to tend to everyone's basic needs, let us remember to acknowledge our total humanity and the need that everyone has for the arts.

The arts are a significant part of our cultural identity as Jamaicans. It also provides an avenue for coping in times of great difficulty such as this.

If you are reading this, I'd like to encourage you to make a donation to the Jamaica Center for the Arts. Hurricane Melissa made a terrible impact in St. Elizabeth. Please donate to this arts education center in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth.

How to Donate:

1) PayPal (last slide)
2) Facebook (link in bio)
3) Bank Transfer (slide 4)
