Don’t miss Handscape at the WDDDFF 2026 Saturday Short Dance Film Program 2!

Saturday, November 7th at 4:00pm at YBCA Screening Room

Contemporary Shanghai, summer. Xia Qing is a teenage boy who wears hearing aids and lives for dance. He finds pure joy just from copying Martha Graham's hand gestures out of a dance magazine. There's a precocious streak in him too: he sometimes paints his pinky nail red, just for that private glimpse of beauty. But these passions are met only with confusion and suspicion from his single, deaf mother. When a rare, once-in-a-blue-moon chance comes to audition for his favorite dance company, he has no choice but to return to his own body, seeking his mother's approval and longing to resolve an obscure crisis of self-identity through the silent language at his fingertips.

[CONTENT DESCRIPTION: A flyer for Handscape at the World Deaf & Disabled Dance Film Festival with a colorful cosmic background. The WDDDFF and UJDC logos are in the top left and right corners. Text at the top reads: Saturday, Nov 7 | 4 PM. Handscape. On the left is the film poster, featuring overlapping close-up images of hands in warm green, yellow, and orange tones. Two Chinese characters appear vertically across one hand, with the title Handscape near the bottom. On the upper right: Film still of a person with short dark hair standing in a small outdoor courtyard. They tilt their face upward and reach one arm high above their head, while their other hand rests against their chest. They wear a muted green T-shirt and dark pants with white side stripes; their fingernails are painted red. Pale walls with patterned openings surround them, with an air-conditioning unit on the left and ivy along the upper right edge. No readable text appears in the image. This past summer in Guangzhou, I had the honor of working with a crew of Deaf, CODA, and hearing children to create 《手心·小王子》 (“Little Prince in our Hands), a Chinese sign language, theatre adaptation of the classic tale “Le Petite Prince”. We successfully performed entirely in CSL with the support of accessible captions.

On the International Day of Sign Languages, I’m looking back with gratitude, for the young performers, Deaf and hearing artist collaborators, and the families who trusted us. May we keep building spaces where sign languages are celebrated at the center of storytelling, imagination, and a fulfilling life.

Let’s hear it for Sid Seenivasa, a Fulbright U.S. Student Program researcher in #India and Reach the World’s Winter 2025-26 “Best of the Best” award winner!

Having minored in American Sign Language at @bostonu, Sid jumped on the opportunity to share his research and experiences in Chennai, India, through a #virtualexchange with educator Yiru Chen’s 3rd- through 5th-grade students at St. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf in Brooklyn, #NewYork. Through exceptional articles and video calls conducted in American Sign Language, Sid and Yiru’s students explored Chennai, visited temples, met new friends, and so much more over the course of 11 weeks together.

Bravo, Sid, and congratulations!

New year, new chapter! I am honored to announce that I have joined Deaf Spotlight as a Board Member✨My journey began in filmmaking and eventually led me into the heart of the Deaf community as a Teacher of the Deaf (@tcdeafed proud!). My mission has always been to weave accessibility into storytelling and to empower the deaf, disabled, queer, and diasporic communities. I have found that same vision at the core of Deaf Spotlight. I’m committed to supporting the org, providing the platform and access Deaf artists deserve. You can help us keep Deaf arts thriving by contributing at the link in my bio. I look forward to fueling an accessible 2026 with the talented team. Appreciation and regards to @whynotpatty

easy telling someone how they feel
not as fun to tell someone you love that it’s real
