My favorite time of the year is fast approaching and I’m so excited! I can’t wait for summer to wrap up - it was “fun” while it lasted but I’m ready for orange leaves, cozy reads and chilly winds!

Inspired by @desereads post (pls check it out - it’s so good!) I’ve decided to share some of my top media recs for fall! I’ve consumed everything listed and have enjoyed all the recs to one degree or another. My younger brother even shared some of his favorites!

This trend has been going around for a bit so I tried to include some lesser shown options but of course, there’s so many autumnal media staples! I’ve been loving everyone’s recs so far so if you have any not listed here, feel free to share them in the comments so I can check them out! Can’t believe we’re already halfway done with September 🍂

When was the last time you reminisced on your youth and your first love? Because you will right after reading First Love by Ivan Turgenev!

Первая любовь, a semi-autobiographical piece, follows 16 year old’s Vladimir Petrovich’s first encounter with romance and adult passions. One of Turgenev’s most popular works, this short story was inspired by a crush of his youth.

This was such a simple yet remarkable read. This coming of age story explores the destructive power of passion, the loss of innocence and disillusionment and the strength of nostalgia and memory. Petrovich’s recount of his first crush demonstrate how our earliest emotional experiences leave a permanent mark in our lives, withstanding the test of time and space.

Turgenev’s writing is lyrical and precise with psychological depth that demonstrate a deep understating of human predicaments. Once I started, I could not put this down. Petrovich reminded me so much of Holden and I’m so glad I randomly picked this up on my last trip to BN. A perfect read as we transition from summer to fall!

I can definitely see Turgenev becoming a favorite Russian author of mine. I already got my hands on some of his other works and I cannot wait to get to them! Highly recommend!

Have you ever wondered what your life could’ve turned out like had you made a different choice in the past? I know I have and so do the protagonists of Almost Life by Kiran Millwood Hargrave!

A queer historical romance, Almost Life follows two women - Erica and Laure - who meet by chance as students in Paris the summer of 1978. Their intense love affair triggers a series of what-ifs that withstand the test of time, space, and political changes over three decades.

This was such a beautiful yet bittersweet story about first loves and their lasting effects. It explores themes of passion, devotion, regret, loyalty, friendship and love thoroughly in a manner reminiscent of novels like Call Me By Your Name and Normal People. It forces readers to reflect on their “almost lives” and the address their longing of paths not taken. The characters are complex and multi-layered, so realistic you can’t help but relate to them. Hargrave’s inclusion of the arts - paintings, music, and literature - throughout the text deepen their emotional expression and the storyline making it a very thought provoking and interesting read.

The book is appropriately hyped and I cannot recommend it enough. It starts off slow but has a very strong finish and is definitely one I will be thinking for a while and wouldn’t be surprised to revisit when I’m older. Seriously, pick it up!

I spent last week vacationing at Disney World and the Disney withdrawals were strong enough that I decided to cure them by finally watching Twisted Wonderland but it just made them worst!

To say that I’m obsessed would be an understatement! Twisted Wonderland the animation follows high school student Yu who is pulled from his normal life into Twisted-Wonderland, a realm of magic, to attend Night Raven College, a famous magic school with seven distinct dorms modeled after classic Disney villains. As Yu is powerless, he must figure out how to return home with the help of his uncooperative classmates.

The anime is witty, fast paced and visually aesthetic. I could tell the creator of Black Butler was the mastermind behind the art right away! Season 1 explores the dangers of emotional suppression, the importance of friendship and emphasizes the necessity of remaining optimistic in the face of adversity.

I loved getting to see how each student reflected their dorms and how they displayed the values and principles of their villain predecessors. I think I would’ve been a member of Heartslabyul and followed the rules set by the Queen of Hearts to keep my head! ♥️

My favorite characters were Grim and Trey - Grim for its passion and determination and Trey for how kind he was to the underclassmen despite Riddle’s tyrannical rule. He was like a nicer version of Tssuki lol! ♣️

The anime is an adaptation of a mobile game of the same name inspired by Disney villains and I can’t wait to play it. I’m so excited for season 2 to premiere later in the year. For now, I’ll read the manga and accompany Yu on his adventures! ♦️

☆.｡.:* Pantone Birth Chart ‧͙⁺˚*･༓☾

Saw this trend going around and as a self-certified astrology girl, I had to participate and share some book recs that align with the colors of my Pantone birth chart!

I was not expecting the earth tone palette when I ran the data but the more I looked into my astrological makeup, the more sense it made. These colors definitely express the different planetary energies that make up my natal chart and align with my personality traits and desires.

I’ve read some of the books listed and enjoyed them and their insights while others remain on my tbr list (I won’t say which, hehe).

I love astrology and I love books so to be able to combine both was a blast and a good distraction from the slow work day! I included my full birth chart at the end for anyone that may want to draw comparisons or for those that know me, further explore why I am the way that I am 😇

I’ve been meaning to get back into fantasy for some time now and I’m so glad that I chose Paladin’s Grace by T. Kingfisher to do that!

Paladin’s Grace is a cozy romantasy that follows a traumatized paladin, Stephen, and a fugitive perfumer, Grace, as they join forces to solve a murder mystery wrecking havoc in their town.

I knew from the (amazing, stunning, beautiful, gorgeous, blah blah blah) cover that I was in for a ride. I’d seen the series make rounds on here several times but I was nervous that it wouldn’t live up to the hype - thankfully, I had nothing to worry about because it was great!

Kingfisher establishes a great balance between fantasy and romance and maintains cozy fantasy elements as the characters work on healing and finding happiness. The story successfully explores the question of who gets left behind after a loss through its themes of identity, purpose, and belonging, encouraging readers to consider choosing gentleness despite living a violent world.

I loved all the characters and their relationships. Grace and Tabs reminded me so much of my cat and I. I found Stephen to be the most relatable - and my new book boyfriend! I’m so excited to see what the future has in store for the rest of the paladins!

Overall, the book is funny, heartwarming, witty and romantic with moments of darkness that often took me by surprise. Kingfisher is on the road to becoming a favorite author of mine so of course I highly recommend this!

⋆˚𖤓˖° Once a Directioner…⋆˚𖤓˖°

I can’t believe it’s One Direction’s 16th anniversary!

It’s thanks to the group that I made some life long friends, enhanced my writing capabilities and learned what it really means to be a fangirl. We went through so many epic highs and lows during their active years as a group and it’s been a pleasure seeing them grow as artists from the very beginning until now. When it comes to them, you cannot cite the deep magic to me, witches! I was clearly there when it was written!

Just last week @emmyteereads and I saw Louis live in Boston and it was a great experience. He played Night Changes and based on the crowd’s reaction, it’s obvious that we’re all in this directioner life for the long haul! I had the privilege of seeing the group live multiple times and I feel for those who didn’t get to experience it because it really was magical.

I am who I am today because of those boys and they will forever hold a special place in my heart even as my interests evolve. I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for them xx

⍣ ೋ July Haul ⍣ ೋ

Do I have a book shopping problem? Yes. Is it my fault? …no comment! One of my bookish goals this year was to only buy a handful of anticipated releases and yet here we are…definitely need to develop better spending habits when it comes to my hobbies, reading included. Any tips on how to achieve this are welcomed! Don’t get me wrong - I love the library and I’m there more often than not but I also cannot help myself when I see a bookstore!

These pictured here are the latest additions to my shelves just this past week. I already have plans to buy two more books BUT they’re part of a series I’m already reading and enjoying so they don’t count! Hopefully I manage to reel myself in afterwards. I’m sure my wallet will thank me!

*.·:·.✧ July Hopefuls ✧.·:·.*

Happy first week of July! I hope that everyone who celebrated the 4th had a good holiday weekend. My family and I went camping and it was a nice break from the city. We almost got a visit from the friendly (hopefully) neighborhood black bear but other campers managed to spook it away much to my disappointment and my family’s relief!

I’ve been curating a list of books I have hopes will enjoy as a slump snuck its way behind me at the start of summer so here is a list of some options for this month. I already started Paladin’s Grace and I’m loving it and I hope to finish Project Hail Mary once and for all….

Not pictured here are the e-books I’m hoping to also read including: Saturn Returning by Kim Narby, Muñeca by Cynthia Gomez, and Grief Eater by Emma Osborne to name a few. My Libby is begging for a break at this point!

I’m looking forward to my local library’s reading challenge keeping me on track with this list to accomplish my reading goals!

Managed to get through my first memoir of the year and it was Strangers by Belle Burden!

Strangers, a now viral memoir, recalls the sudden collapse of Burden’s 20-year marriage to a wealthy financier after receiving a voicemail about his affair during the pandemic. The book details her life journey exploring themes of betrayal, family, identity and empowerment.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this given how polarizing it’s become. I often found myself reflecting on my own perceptions of marriage and divorce as I was reading and comparing my sociological understanding of each in relation to those around me. Despite how progressive society has become, binary thinking still defines most people’s perception of marriage creating unrealistic expectations about relationship longevity and success.

At its core, this memoir is about betrayal and how regardless of social standing it hurts everyone involved! I enjoyed Burden’s atmospheric writing and appreciated her commentary on contemporary gender roles and expectations. The pacing allows readers to appropriately reflect on each part and confront the emotional truth of overcoming the loss that stems from broken trust.

I understand why some readers find it difficult to extend empathy towards Burden and her experience given her privileged background. It’s hard to sympathize with a socialite who has access to resources that make navigating complex - in this case legal - situations easier however, her experiences with marriage, motherhood and infidelity are too common and relatable. All relationships are complex and their maintenance requires nuance.

I recommend this to anyone looking to make a heartfelt connection with a narrator and engage with reflections on intimacy, gender and relationships.

Happy Gemini season to all who celebrate! Today is my 27th birthday and I genuinely cannot wrap my head around it. I still feel like a teenager!

I’m privileged to have friends and family who know me well and aren’t above spoiling me. From twilight cupcakes to a day trip to Boston, I’m so thankful for all the quality time I spent with everyone celebrating over the past couple days and the gifts I received, including these books which I can’t wait to read!

I’m excited to see what this year has in store for me - hopefully all good things! 🎂
