Young Space was a project highlighting emerging artists and small galleries. Its spawn is @dovetail.mag

Freckles for the grid ☀ Welp, I said it before and then I chickened out, but Young Space is saying farewell. The website will go dark in early August, so if you’re an artist whose work was featured here over the years and you want to save anything, take those screenshots! The Instagram will remain live because I love this archive, and I may occasionally post updates about other projects. @dovetail.mag is still running, which began as an offshoot of Young Space anyway and is my favorite place to escape to these days (it certainly is an enabler in my escapes) and you can continue to find my writing on @thisiscolossal.

Folks, it’s been a real pleasure, and since 2014, it’s been an honor to share your work, connecting also with countless galleries and other organizers along the way—even helping to launch a few careers! It certainly launched mine, and it just happened to take off when everyone got smartphones and artists first discovered Instagram, before businesses or institutions were even here and video was but a dream. That feels like a totally different world compared to now, but of course, things naturally change. Personally, though, I’ve never been interested in chasing algorithms, and it was just by chance that I was ever online this much đŸ€Ș Young Space has run its course and I’m so grateful for and proud of it. See you on a trail somewhere! Thanks again for everything.

Sydney Kleinrock (@sydneykleinrock) combines quilting and painting techniques into a practice inspired by daily life, memories, literature, and nature around where she lives in Brooklyn. These low-relief, geometric, soft sculptures explore the relationships between tensions and harmonies—“the interconnectedness of the natural and manmade worlds, the compression and expansion of time through non-linear narrative, and the playful friction between tactility and formality,” she says.

Quilts, by design, are meant to be handled—to essentially hold us. Oil paintings, however, are not. Recent pieces resemble small houses or building blocks evocative of childhood toys. Playing with this dialectic, Kleinrock experiments with hardware and paint application to hone an element of humor or irony in their ultimate untouchableness as works of art. “My process of choosing and arranging abstracted forms and representational images to paint serves as an outlet for my understanding and mapping of the intangible,” the artist says.

Kleinrock’s work was recently included in ‘Day for Night’ at @irl.nyc, and she currently has work in @deannaevansprojects’ E-Flat File. by @yngspc

Situating her practice within the sphere of expanded drawing, Tāmaki Makaurau-based (Auckland, New Zealand) artist @georgi.a.rnold intuitively incorporates ceramics, painting, metalwork, and sculpture with two-dimensional media. “My work investigates the messy potential of autobiography and explores the playful tension between depicting imagery and the range of expressive mark making her materials offer,” she says.

Surrealist techniques, automatism, and what she describes as “mind-wandering” are the paths along which she “carves out” imagery exploring memories, networks, and human-plant entanglements. “Experimenting with turning up or down my conscious control while drawing, I make space for impulses of the subconscious and that of the materials,” she says. “I see my practice as a way to connect myself and the world, creating work that is both diaristic and imaginative.”

Opening at the end of April, Arnold’s work will be on view at @aotearoaartfair with @melanierogergallery, and in July, her work will be included in a group exhibition focused on drawing at @whangareiartmuseum. by @yngspc

@stephanie.temma.hier’s handmade stoneware frames extend beyond a simple four-sided container, transforming into furnishings, decor, garden elements, and more that augment obscure narratives. They’re simultaneously romantic, uncanny, intimate, even slightly sinister. Her killer solo show ‘Swan Song’ at @antonkerngallery continues for one more week, highlighting tender paintings of idealized animals and objects—many of which revolve around swans and sweet treats as meditations on desire, drama, nostalgia, and consumption. by @yngspc

Currently completing an MA at RCA, David Hanes (@davidhanes.info) delves into the way we see—and what we take away from seeing. “My practice explores dwelling—both dwelling on the past through memory and recollection and creating paintings as dwelling-places: spaces to inhabit and return to,” he says.

Beginning with sketches the artist creates outdoors, made with a combination of pencils, pens, and pastels, Hanes allows records of chance encounters to simmer in an ever-growing archive, which he refers to once back in the studio. Rather than preparatory sketches, he views them as something more akin to devotional objects—as “evidence of sustained looking.”

Throughout the past year, Hanes has worked to deepen his engagement with what he describes as the “spiritual dimensions” of painting and the socio-political histories that are deeply intertwined with landscapes, from the way they are organized, controlled, and worked to how and why they have been portrayed certain ways throughout art history. “I’ve also pushed the material urgency of the work—layering toward collapse, marks that weird themselves into enigma, surfaces that oscillate between control and loss,” he says.

Next month, see Hanes’ work at @clipper__cuts in Brussels, curated by @stan__van__steendam, then, of course, the MA show at @royalcollegeofart in June. After that, keep an eye out for his inclusion in a group show at @pm______am. by @yngspc

Cecilia Sebastian de Erice’s (@ceciliasebastiandeerice) approach to her series ‘Redes’ (‘Networks’) centers around the relationship between unpredictability and structure. She begins by arbitrarily folding and creasing the canvas, then dragging it on the ground so that dirt and debris defines the texture and literally grounds it. From there, she intuitively follows the surface’s chance visual cues.

“I am interested in the tension and coexistence between opposites: the conscious and the unconscious, control and chance, method and automatism,” Sebastian de Erice says. “Through painting, I explore how fragmented elements can form a cohesive whole, reflecting the way ideas emerge, connect, and evolve in the mind. The work addresses the impossibility of fully understanding our own mental processes, proposing instead an open system of relations—fluid, non-hierarchical, and in constant expansion—where meaning is not fixed but continuously generated through connections.” by @yngspc

Ketty Haolin Zhang (@kettyzzz)’s recent interventions with found objects are ethereal, almost mystical. “I draw from personal archives, literature, pop culture, mythology, and visual criticism, often reflecting on how one builds their identity knowingly and unknowingly, and how belonging is defined and experienced beyond fixed notions of home or origin,” the artist says.

Zhang, who is based between New York and Vancouver, is interested in what she describes as “states of provisional belonging,” channeled through mixed-media assemblages reimagined from items we can imagine to be keepsakes or heirlooms. “Informed by my experience as a 1.5-generation immigrant, I’m drawn to sites and moments of negotiation: between devotion and desire, care and control, the spiritual and the mundane,” she says. “I’m interested in how belonging is constructed and maintained under conditions of uncertainty.” by @yngspc

I love the way @inga.dal_paints works framing devices like windows and doorways into her brushy, gestural oil paintings that emanate a kind of warmth, like sitting in a cottage and looking out at a rural landscape as a summer evening starts to cool by @yngspc

“My very first sculpture was shaped like a simple stone found by the river—plain and unadorned,” @naotomiyazaki_sculptor says. “Over time, however, the forms gradually became more complex, undergoing numerous transformations.”

Over the course of nearly two decades, the Tokyo-based artist has juxtaposed organic textures with modular, modernist elements in a range of forms—some minimal, some more elaborate, and sometimes incorporating color or becoming almost environmental at a large scale. Shown here are works from his ‘Rounded Form’ and ‘Frames’ series. by @yngspc
