Maisie Daphne Williams. Granny. My grandmother passed away yesterday evening. For a moment I thought posting this was too personal, but my grandmother wasn’t just mine, she was a positive part of so many lives over the years. It would be selfish of me not to share that with you, her extended family. From Guyana, to New York, to Georgia and everywhere in between, she left a mark on everyone she knew. If you ever met Maisie, you probably remember her ability to fill a room with her large personality, her kindness, her hospitality and her willingness to give even if it meant going without…she would make a pea feed an army. As a teacher she was known for her kindness, fierce but fair discipline, and enthusiasm. As a mother/grandmother….well there aren’t enough adjectives…

My whole life I knew her to be energetic and vibrant, always moving and doing things to stay busy. Personally, the sad part isn’t her death, it was seeing her slowly succumbing to her mortality. She’s in a much better place now, I’m sure of that. This is not really a time of anguish for me, but an opportunity to celebrate what a wonderful life my grandmother lived. A small part of the world is a better place because of her and who she touched. I wouldn’t be me had it not been for her steady guidance and example, so thank her if you’ve ever thought I was a decent person.
