These images are inspired by various animals and plants culturally significant to Yaqui people and to the Sonoran Desert, each image titled in the Yaqui language. Hintil Kuu Ca began in 1973 in Oakland as a Native American child development center created to support young children and their families. Over the years, it became more than a childcare program, helping preserve and celebrate Native culture, traditions, and community, including through Pomo cultural activities and dance. Today, Hintil Kuu ca continues that legacy as an Oakland Unified School District early childhood school, serving young children while carrying forward its history of Native community and cultural connection. Before that, during the 1969-1971 Alcatraz Island Occupation. Mothers and elders organized to teach traditional songs, stories and history pushing back against the standard school curriculum that ignored native cultures. JOIN US for a gathering being held at the school grounds for dancing, songs, vendors, and food. To bring together community and educate those who donโ€™t know, stand proudly in the culture that shaped us, and never forget the ancestors who fought, sacrificed, and paved the way for us. We carry their legacy forward not just by remembering where we come from, but by representing them with pride, purpose, and strength. We are still here. by @yoeme400

Jesse - 2026 - 17 Years Later โฌ‡๏ธ 17 years later. A hurting 12 year old boy trying to find himself and love in the streets. I wasnโ€™t aware of my importance on Mother Earth or that I had ancestors walking with me when I thought I was alone. The journey I was on had me growing up in the streets and system ending up in jails and prison. My journey ALSO brought me to a road of healing, a road that taught me Iโ€™m a descendant of warriors that resisted to give me life. We arenโ€™t just what society tells us we are, We are warriors of our people and communities. We are defenders of Mother Earth and the areas that society only sees as negative. I give thanks to my ancestors and creator for guiding me on my journey.
