You may not be able to see in the photo, but I’m kind of crying. Being this close to Red Polygons,(1950) is like meeting a favorite celebrity Jamison, Baldwin, Bourdain.
A true original who changed the game, Alexander “Sandy” Calder created art in all visible dimensions with a lyrical gracefulness that made weight and space and color dance on air!
His mobiles and stabiles liberate gravity, while redefining alignment. Each composition a dance of beauty in balanced focus. I remain eternally in awe.

When we were young we stayed up all night and curled into each other‘s arms and slept deep and got up in the afternoon and hid from the heat at the movies or Mazza Gallerie, to walk out at dusk to a wave of cricket calls and warm city smells and go to a show, maybe @fortrenoconcerts. There were fireflies and cans of beer and mix tapes, and somebody had a car, somebody’s parents were out of town and maybe they had a pool, somebody would let you “bum a smoke” and swim in your shorts and lie on the grass and laugh and laugh and the stars and the city watched over us! It really was sublime to be a teenager in the 1990’s!

They say Art is Good for the Soul.
I know it to be true. Just look at this radiant work transcending language and line, undeniably alive and exuberant.
Beyond order and structure there is a place where imagination gets to dance!Joan Miró visited that place often and brought back genius!

This remarkable sugar-lift aquatint with carborundum relief and detailed hand-painting on handmade Moulin du Gué papier mega-mural is one of TWO that embrace you in color and rhythmic urgency in the main galley @phillipscollection
Never chaotic, but syncopated and studied- @karlisima07 and I soaked up the vibes!

I first met this painting at Harvard in the autumn of 1993. I’d already been forever changed by the Seagrams in London the winter before, but when I saw this one, I knew I’d be in love forever. This spring, we had the tremendous fortune of having it in a show @phillipscollection and it felt like running into an old lover, coming around the corner onto a sunbleached street in Rome, or on the ferry to Lamu,… Hyannis. I was instantly flooded with memories of who I was when we first met, and the stirring of Eros and electric color, and aliveness that had never gone away.
