My uncle's name was Alexander Metchkarov.

Alexander, like the great Macedonian king, and also my son's middle name.

Metchka in Bulgarian means "bear". Our family name was earned when my great great grandfather was running for mayor, and his opponent challenged him to fight a bear on the town square. He subdued the bear, won the election, and became a legend.

My uncle was deeply proud of his ancestry. He had encyclopedic knowledge of history and culture. He held himself to the highest standards, both academically and professionally, and growing up modestly with parents who refused to belong to the Bulgarian Communist Party, he had no choice but to earn full scholarships for both his master's degrees. He self-taught himself English by reading English books with a dictionary, writing down and translating every unknown word. He was deeply courteous and completely selfless, often naively so.

He did not have any children and I did not have a father, so from the moment I was born, he assumed the role of parent and helped my mom and grandparents raise me. We all lived together until my mom and I moved out on our own when I was 12. With me, he was both insistent and adoring. His small apartment is full of framed photos of me at every age. As the parent in charge of school work, he expected nothing short of excellence. I remember countless long nights sitting with him at his desk, me summarizing lessons and him saying, that was good, do it one more time.

Saying goodbye to him is one of the hardest things I've ever done. I will miss his terrible sense of humor, his easy laughter, his earnestness, his eagerness to be of help, especially to the few people he truly loved, his integrity, his discipline, and above all, his endless faith in me.

In the last few years, I started to feel him slip away as pain overwhelmed his body, first gradually, and then precipitously. He of all people deserved a better ending. He deserved another 20 good years. He deserved the world, but at least he is now free of the pain.
