Yoga isn't just for improving your flexibility. Research suggests that the combination of physical alignment, controlled breathing and focused attention can actually help manage depression and anxiety.

We sat down with yoga expert Jake Panasevich, E-RYT (@yogawithjake) to break down how a yoga practice can complement traditional mental health treatments.

DM or comment “Y40” if you want my follow-along specialty class for guys in their late 30s and beyond who want to move well WITHOUT the aches and pains!

I practiced cobra wrong for years before I figured this out. Simply adjusting the focus in the pose taught me more than 3 years of taking vinyasa flow classes.

Save this for your next session that includes cobra! by @yogawithjake

There’s certain hard truths that you come to realize as a guy in your 40s and beyond:

1️⃣ Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face (Mike Tyson). I’ve found that no matter how much you plan, something unexpected will happen, and when it does, be willing to adjust and let go of the idea that there will be a simple/tidy resolution.

2️⃣ If you think someone’s ruined your life, you’re right. It’s you (Friedrich Nietzsche). This is a tough one to come to terms with at times. However, at some point you have to take responsibility for your stuff, as tough and unfair as it might be.

3️⃣ Never mistake habit for hard work (Shannon Sharpe’s dad). A great example of this is the person who goes to the gym all the time and does the same thing but doesn’t see results. This truth really lands for me lately. I am a creature of habit and pride myself in being consistent. Yet, if you become complacent or just go through the movements without intent, it isn’t worth your energy. This often means leaning into the tough, unfamiliar stuff.

As a guy, I’ve become receptive to these truths and see them in my own life, and the best tool I have to work with them is yoga.

I practiced this pose every day for a week..and here’s what it can do for your back 👇🏼

If you spend hours at your desk or on your phone with rounded shoulders, I-phone neck and a creaky back, locust is for you!

This powerful pose combines strength + shoulder / chest / back opening, helping you:

•Counter slouched shoulders & neck
•Open tight shoulders & upper back
•Strengthen subtle muscles in your back
•Reduce stiffness in your shoulders & back from sitting
•Build better posture over time

Try 5-7 repetitions a day for a week. Inhale as you lift up into it and hold for 3-5 breaths. You will only see the benefits if you are consistent with this movement for at least a week.

Save this & try it after or before work to counter desk pose.

I’m forever grateful for my experience as an athlete growing up. But here are 3 things that I wish I had learned about performance & pressure as an athlete, that I got from yoga:

1️⃣ Do not base all of your self-worth on wins & loses, one performance, challenge or others opinions. On the battlefield of life, you’re going to win some, & you will (inevitably) lose some. Thats not what is at stake. What matters is that you put your heart into it.

2️⃣ Fall in love with the process / practice. It’s through that hard work, consistency & patience that you’ll find value. Know that anything worth doing will take some time.

3️⃣ Be willing to let go, course-correct, but keep going. It’s easy to put on the blinders & work/grind without being self-aware. Sometimes it’s important to take a hard, critical look at what you’re doing, and do more of what works & less of what doesn’t.

✅ Comment “Y40” if you’re a guy in your late 30s & beyond, & will send you FREE follow-along videos to get started with yoga!
