Last night was so beautiful and fufilling. It’s so important to @therealdonald_ and I that we create spaces that are For Us By Us and to have a moment to celebrate Juneteenth with our people is so special. We don’t take this work lightly & we appreciate all the love, support and feedback. Follow @voguedownmpls for information on Balls, Classes, Sessions and Community Partnerships. The moment I found Ballroom It sparked a fire in me again. I’m a passionate person in general so when I went through a stint of burn out especially with Dance It took so much energy from me more than I expected. To just stop moving, expressing and connecting took a tole on me mentally, emotionally and physically. I realized in that moment “Oh I don’t just dance for fun I do this to stay sane” lol So when Ballroom especially Vogue came into my life I found that same spark I first felt when I was dancing to Ciara in my living room. I found my now Best Friend & Business partner @therealdonald_ along with my black gay ass chosen family ✊🏾💛❤️💚, I found out about the Beautiful Black Queer & Trans history of Ballroom while being reminded of the experiences are Elders & Ancestors Faced so we could be here doing the gay dance.

Last but not least I found YONIKA 💕

In this photo I’m 17 years old performing my spoken word live at the Minneapolis Institute of Art this photo isn’t special because of that moment it’s special because of the impact it made across the world.

Let me Explain…

That same year I was on a college tour with my mom. While we’re on the bus traveling to the next city, My friend DMs me, He was a French exchange student from my school. By this time he was back home in France. When I open the message he sends me this photo and says He showed this photo to one of his friends at school. She is a black girl in a predominantly white school and always feels the need to straighten her hair in order to fit in but when my he showed her this photo something changed. She felt inspired and reflected in seeing another Black Girl Rock her natural hair (a high top fade at that lol) that she decided to cut her hair. She saw me all the way across the world in Minnesota and felt seen and empowered to be more of her authentic self. I showed this message to my mom who to my surprise bursted in tears this is a rare occurrence so I knew it was a special moment. My mom was seeing my impact in real time.

I’ve given years of my life outsourcing myself to a collective mission and don’t get me wrong I will forever be a community oriented person but it got to a point where I asked myself was all the time, money and attention focusing on what would be best for the group over myself worth it and the awnser is No.
