I won the Gold Medal, the recipient of the Audience Choice Prize and Student Jury Prize in the 2024 Gina Bachauer International Artist Competition

Youl Sun (@yooulsun) daring to play a Clementi sonata (Op. 37 No. 2 in G Major) at the Ljubljana Competition a few months ago, on his way to a 2nd Prize. Muzio Clementi (1752-1832) published this Sonata in 1798 alongside two others. At that time, his piano virtuoso career was over. In London, he became a renowned teacher, conductor and composer. He also had a publishing house and was interested in the improvement of the pianoforte mechanism. This Sonata in G Major has 3 movements: an Allegro with a simple theme and motif recalling the sound of the flute; an Adagio ‘in the solemn style’ which could be qualified as a proto-romantic gem drawing on classical/galant structures with a four-part song where the pianist has to manage the polyphony; an Allegro con spirito closing the work with fire and the feel of caccia with petulant trumpets and horn bringing the work to a close as evidenced by Sun’s interpretation of this coda.

Let’s talk about the Mozart/Clementi rivalry. On Christmas Eve of 1781, Emperor Joseph II organized a duel between two musicians who had never met before and had no idea about the duel: Clementi and Mozart. The latter was already in town for 2 months but the former just arrived the day of: indeed, Clementi was sent on a tour by the Broadwood piano firm to promote their grand pianos. The guests were placing bets before the contest. Clementi started with his Sonata Op. 24, No. 2 in B-flat major… You will recognize the motif of the future Magic Flute overture: yes, Mozart took it from Clementi. Clementi also played his fast and furious Toccata Op. 11. Mozart’s response was an improvisation and the 12 variations on « Ah vous dirai-je maman » (aka the melody of Twinkle Twinkle). Then they did some sight-reading and improvised on theme of Paisiello… After which, the Emperor declared a tie. Afterwards, Clementi raved about Mozart’s exquisite touch and grace while Mozart was bitter: « Clementi plays well, as far as execution with the right hand goes. His greatest strength lies in his passages in thirds. Apart from that, he doesn’t have a Kreuzer’s worth of taste or feeling. On May 22–23, I’ll be performing Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 5 “Egyptian” with Maestro Markus Poschner and the Utah Symphony at Abravanel Hall!

It feels especially meaningful to reunite with the Utah Symphony two years after sharing the stage at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition!
