If you’ve been following this account for a while, you probably know that Yoshi is a very nervous and anxious boy. Now that we’re working with a board certified veterinary behaviorist, I want to share more about his journey.

Yoshi has been afraid of going outside since he was rehomed in July, but it became much more severe a couple months later. Rehomed dogs often take time to show their full personalities because of the adrenaline of adjusting to a new home and trying to impress their new owner. Around that time, I worked with a trainer who wasn’t able to help us but suggested anxiety medication, which I wasn’t ready to consider yet.

A few months later, I was pulling Yoshi out from under the couch to put on his harness while he shook like a little leaf, and realized he was far too above threshold before even leaving the apartment to actually learn. In that state, he can’t evaluate whether something is truly dangerous - he’s already in fight or flight. I realized he might need medication to help him learn that the world isn’t so scary.

Yoshi’s primary vet started him on Prozac, which we tried for 5 months. After a long adjustment period and dose changes, it unfortunately didn’t help much. He also stopped playing with toys and his appetite never fully returned.

I recently took Yoshi to Alison Gerken, one of only about 100 board certified veterinary behaviorists in the world. She diagnosed him with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Fear-induced Aggression. He is not an “aggressive dog”, but fear-induced aggression simply means a dog uses behaviors like barking, growling, or lunging to communicate fear.

We’re now working with Dr. Gerken to find the right medication or combination of medications to help Yoshi feel safer in the world. Her goal for dogs like him is 50–75% improvement within 3 months, followed by 6–9 months of maintained stability before remission.

It’s hard for me to record Yoshi in the state shown in some of these videos, but I do it so someday I can look back and see how far he’s come. I’m sharing his journey not to recommend any specific treatment plan, but to help other pet parents navigating behavioral conditions feel a little less alone. 🤍 by @yoshiweeniedog
