I am *not* a FOMO person. I’ve made peace with missing things, but when details from #99CENTS started hitting my feed — curated by Barry McGee, @jeffreydeitchgallery & @theholenyc with over two hundred artists taking over a shuttered 99 cent store on Wilshire during Frieze week — I was seriously window shopping last-minute flights to LA. 🫨

I couldn’t make it, so I did the next best thing — I asked my buddy @yosoh to go be my eyes. He showed up, took some pics, and even bumped into @markmothersbaugh while he was there - just casually browsing the aisles of a former 99 cent store filled with some of the biggest names in contemporary art - that’s just the kind of show this was.

A building that’s been boarded up since the fires, turned into an artist flea market, a zine fair, a community hangout… Art filling the aisles where discount cleaning supplies used to be. This is exactly what we all need to be doing right now. Not more optimization. More weird. More good for the sake of good.

The internet brought us together. It let the creatives and the makers find each other first. Then everyone else showed up, and connections became clicks, and clicks became the algorithm, and the algorithm became a hunger that never gets fed. We’ve been broken by it. We know we’ve been broken by it.

So you balance the scales. You fill a 99 cent store with art. You put zines in people’s hands. You remind them what it felt like before the feed told them what to feel. Feelings that reverberate around the globe - making it all the way from Los Angeles to me in Toledo.

Thank you to #BarryMcGee, the @theholenyc and congrats to every artist who showed up to make this happen. This is the work.
