A Tale through Generations, 시엔느 10주년 영상 (exerpt 발췌)

Last summer, I made a film I was quite drawn to. Time moves slowly, left untouched. Suspense is deliberately absent; repetition and rhythm take over, tracing generations in circulation. I wanted the film to have no ending—and truly, it doesn’t.

Directed by me & @jonggeun__han
Cinematograph @jinematography
Grip @sang_j03
Styling @youngshil_b
Act @kimjuuone @camelostrich @ym_studio @anne.cartereau @flight__agency

<Flowers, Trees, Mirrors>

“…Black people mostly look down or look up but don’t look at each other, and white people mostly look away. The universe is nothing but a hollow drum.” (The Fire Next Time, Baldwin)

“The universe is a hollow drum.” Of all the lines I’ve carried with me these past few years, this is the one I return to most. For a long time I couldn’t say why. I think now it’s because the line names something I had long sensed but never had words for: the strange emptiness between people. We live in the same world. We share streets and institutions, languages and histories, and still something is missing in the space between us, a pervasive layer of vacuum where people never quite meet. That absence resists being named. And when plain language fails, we borrow the poet’s. That’s when I say it: the universe is a hollow drum.

What troubles me is that this emptiness need not announce itself through anything as blunt as hatred, anger, or violence. It can exist quietly, in the ordinary ways we pass one another without acknowledging the lives being lived around us. It is held in place by social structures, by institutions, by habits of perception that decide whose existence counts and whose does not. Often nothing visibly happens at all. Only a person missing from the way we understand the world. Perhaps that is why Baldwin’s hollow drum feels so precise to me: a world full of people, yet strangely empty of one another.

Perhaps, then, the hollowness Baldwin describes comes not from an absence of people, but from our failure to recognise them as part of our world. This is where I find myself turning to the question of the Other.

The Other takes many forms in philosophy. For Sartre, the other’s gaze makes me aware of myself as an object in someone else’s world. For Edward Said, the West constructs the East as its Other, defining itself through that distinction. In both, the Other is something that unsettles the self or is used to define it. Levinas moves in another direction. For him, the other person is neither a threat nor a mirror, but a demand: “The face of the other says to me: Thou shalt not kill.” It is through this li by @youkimforever

<Freedom, Market, Imagination>

“What, then, is time? If no one asks me, I know; if I wish to explain it to one that asketh, I know not.”
— Augustine

I think the same could be said of ‘freedom’. Everyone desires freedom, and people are willing to resort to violence and sacrifice in order to defend it. Yet when asked what freedom actually is, we find ourselves struggling to give a clear answer.

Freedom is an immense and abstract concept. Rather than attempting to define it, I find it more meaningful to trace how it has been spoken of in particular historical and social contexts. In South Korea, for instance, the words ‘freedom’ and ‘liberal democracy’ have been invoked with remarkable frequency as political slogans in recent years. This has led me to return to a question: what is freedom?

From what I have observed in South Korea in the 2020s, freedom seems to function as a kind of rhetoric that presupposes a binary opposition. Yet what stands on the other side of that opposition is never fixed. It shifts according to the political convenience of the time and those in power, much as it did under McCarthyism.

“I value my individual freedom, so why should I have to think about the collective?”

“I worked hard and earned my money freely, so why should I be forced to redistribute it?”

“If freedom of expression exists, then surely I have the freedom to express hatred too.” (I heard this one particularly often during Pride Month.)

These invocations of freedom emerge from different political and social contexts, yet they share a particular understanding of the individual : someone whose freedom is imagined independently of the lives and conditions of others.

This understanding bears a striking resemblance to the neoliberal conception of the human being—an autonomous, self-responsible individual whose relationship to society is increasingly defined through competition.

Within this framework, freedom is understood as both the right and the achievement of an autonomous, self-responsible individual. Yet this freedom is sustained through the exclusion of others, while economic desire becomes its fundamental organising principle. Put sim by @youkimforever

THE BLUE COLLAR |

Q. Among the films and videos you’ve made, is there a project that you came to appreciate more, or that took on a different meaning, as time passed?
A. Whenever I finished a project, it was always really difficult for me to watch it again.
But as time has passed, I think I’ve become able to look back on my work a little more comfortably.

Q. Is there anything you’ve kept for a long time that you would still want to hold onto, even if it became old or no longer useful?
A. I’m not particularly attached to objects, but if there’s one thing I’d like to keep for a long time, it would be these books.

Q. Lastly, what does “vintage” mean to you?
A. To me, vintage is something that carries a sense of the life of the person who once used it.
