Representation matters. But representation without transformation isn’t enough. We need more Black educators who see teaching as an act of liberation and aren’t afraid to challenge systems that fail our children.

Happy Black Educators Appreciation Day featuring @tsmith.inspires!!

“Two things I don’t play about: My family and my lunchtime. If you interrupt my lunch, you’re gonna get swole 😂 Push-ups, laps, and more push-ups. I afford all my mentees the opportunity to change my mind. Hardly ever successful 🤣🤷🏾‍♂️”

Representation matters and our Black boys need positive role models and sometimes a push up or two! LOL

Today we celebrate the brilliance, impact, creativity, and leadership of Black educators everywhere. 🖤✊🏾🍎

We’ll be flooding the feed today with positive content highlighting our Black educators, the impact they have on students and school communities, and the creativity they bring to how we lead, teach, mentor, and support schools every single day.

This work is not easy. It requires heart, resilience, vision, and sacrifice. Yet we continue to show up with style, passion, excellence, and our full Blackness in every space we enter.

Young Black Educators was created to affirm, support, develop, and uplift Black educators while building community among those committed to transforming education for our students and our people. Today is a reminder that our presence matters, our leadership matters, and the work we do deserves to be celebrated loudly.

Happy National Black Educators Appreciation Day. ✨✊🏾

Today, I had the honor of being one of the black professionals invited to speak at a high school in Westchester County, NY for their Black Excellence Personified event.

With each different class, instead of droning on for the entire period about myself and how great I am, I gave the students the option to pick how our period would be spent together: we could do a Q&A where they got to ask me whatever they wanted (as long as it was appropriate) or we could do a simulation activity where we simulate the steps that a specific student in the classroom could go through to become a young changemaker in their community.

For the classes that chose Q&A, I was very open with them and they ended up asking me about my salary, my motivations to address educational barriers, what teaching was like for me in the Bronx, how I stayed motivated throughout being homeless, what my work with the Sparkaroos is like, and other really great questions.

For the classes that chose the simulation activity, I picked a student, asked them what was one thing that they’d wish to change in their community, and then with the help of the class created a story around how that change was made. The students really enjoyed the simulation activity because it taught them that they don’t need money to make change and how to community organize because there’s power in numbers. And what really solidified the simulation for them was revealing to them all of my Spark Leaders who are living proof of kids like them who stood up to make a change.

Today was a really good day 💪🏿😁

Seeing is believing & believing is seeing! 👏🏾🎓

For over two decades, I’ve had the incredible privilege of empowering and uplifting our youth through education. And you know what? It’s been an absolute game-changer!

Putting my doctoral regalia on these bright young minds has become my signature stamp of educational attainment and empowerment. 👩‍🎓 👨‍🎓

It’s a symbol of their potential, their dreams, and their ability to achieve greatness. And let me tell you, the impact has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Every time I witness the transformation in their eyes, the spark of belief that ignites within them, it reaffirms the power of education and the limitless possibilities it holds. It’s like witnessing a miracle unfold before my very eyes. 🌟

But here’s the thing, my friends. It’s not just about the regalia; it’s about the message it carries. It’s about showing these incredible individuals that they are capable of achieving anything they set their minds to. It’s about instilling in them the belief that they are worthy, deserving, and capable of reaching for the stars.

I’ve seen firsthand how this simple act of empowerment can change lives. It’s not just about the external validation; it’s about the internal transformation. It’s about empowering our youth to believe in themselves, to dream big, and to chase those dreams fearlessly.

So, my friends, let’s spread this message far and wide. Let’s remind ourselves and those around us that seeing truly is believing. Let’s empower our youth, uplift their spirits, and be the guiding light that helps them navigate through life’s challenges.

Together, we can create a world where every young mind feels empowered, supported, and capable of achieving greatness. Let’s continue to inspire, motivate, and uplift one another, because when we believe in ourselves and each other, there’s no limit to what we can achieve. 🌟
