Watching figure skating programs has been my meditation and my space and time travel, and it’s another dream come true to shoot my sixth film with the junior world champion and rising-star skater Min-kyu Seo @smk.__.08 and the US ice dancing representative-turned-Milano Cortina Olympics livestream cinematographer Jordan Cowan @jordanicecam @oniceperspectives at the Gangneung Hockey Centre, built for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea; The whole mesmerizing day passed like a daydream 🩵
Still more to go for this film, and for this wonderful beginning, I’m deeply grateful to the commissioner of this work, the PharmaResearch Culture Foundation @prcf.official, and to the supporters, Arts Council Korea and Goethe-Institut Korea 🙏🏼
Most of all, the loudest applause for my excellent Seoul crew: the 1st Assistant Director Chae Jung Yu @ceejaeyu, the 2nd Camera Operator Seok-hyun Gwon, and Sound Recordist Hye-jung Kim ❤️‍🔥
Lastly, the dream makers, always in my heart: the Foundation’s Artistic Director Sohee Park @soheepark_curator and Curator Moonseok Oh 💕 by @youngjun.tak

송은미술대상 25주년 ✨ Presenting 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙜𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙨𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙊𝙪𝙧 𝘽𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 (2026) at the 25th anniversary exhibition of SONGEUN Art Award, collaborated with @unboxing_project, at @songeun_official in Seoul, which opened on 19 August and runs through 23 October!

This sculptural installation evokes a memory of beach roses—해당화 in Korean—along the northern coast of Denmark. After walking for hours beside the shoreline, I found myself alone with nature—until I noticed a naked man standing on a dune covered with beach roses and their red fruits. Looking closer, more figures emerged: what seemed a solitary encounter was in fact a gay cruising area, charged with lust and desire.

Visitors enter this wall-hanging sculpture alone through a curtain of wooden beads. The rose bushes’ dark green foliage is reimagined in strands of wooden beads, and twelve hand-carved red rose hips—made by traditional woodcarvers in South Tyrol—are scattered throughout. Three have transformed into male heads, adapted from historical depictions of St. Christopher, patron saint of travelers. Their gazes hardly meet, yet a quiet longing passes between them.

The dried pollack sculpture with my head and the head of my ancestor, the God of Abundant Fishing, 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙁𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙞𝙣 𝙊𝙪𝙧 𝙊𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 (2026), has now been taken down from the entrance of @artsonje_center in Seoul.

The Center was the very first venue to host the Seoul Queer Film Festival in 1998. Be aware of this: the first public coming-out of a gay TV figure in Korea happened in 2000, and he had to completely leave the media industry, although he later came back and is now thriving.

The wide-open eyes and mouth of dried pollack have traditionally been considered an effective way to ward off evil in Korean folk belief. As a gay man, it wasn’t exactly natural for me to reflect on my ancestry, even less on my maternal lineage, in this deeply patriarchal society. When it comes to the family tree, I’m more like a pair of scissors than a thread in the yarn. But this exhibition gave me the chance and the foundation to look into my roots and extend my families through my practice. Let it begin.

The exhibition was initiated by the unique stronghold of Asian queer art, @sunpridefoundation, and its founder, @patsun430, has shown me a great example. Beyond being my dearest patron, he has invited me to reimagine and reassure myself what extended families can be in real life. Not only have I met new friends through his broad network, but attending his wedding was also my very first time witnessing East Asian gay couples with their children. It was a truly heartwarming surprise—not to mention his and Sean’s own baby now.

While I can’t even keep a cactus alive at home, I wouldn’t start considering raising my own child. But simply thinking about my friends holding rainbow flags in cities around the world makes me smile and feel excited about the flow of life.

Deepest thanks to Patrick and Sunjung @sunjung.samuso, again and again, for making this milestone possible beyond the art world 🏳️‍🌈✨
And naturally extended to the whole team @cho.hhn Sooyoung Choi @sanghyunnha @tsuwan @liqipedia 🙌🏼💕

The 5th film is shaped around Baroque gestures (and the Korean counterpart), and my dearest collaborator, @soetkinelbers—early music specialist, Baroque gesture expert, and electronic musician—filled a 17th-century church in Brussels with the movements of her hands, the gaze of her eyes, and her presence 🫳🏼👁️🫦✨

My payback for the patriarchal masculinity of my father and the factory workers at a Hyundai subsidiary who mocked my childhood “girly” masculinity, 𝘼 𝙎𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙋𝙖𝙨𝙩 (2019), is a sculpture composed of more than a thousand fragments from a used Hyundai car.
Reflecting numerous possibilities of being, the work is currently on view at @collectionservais in Brussels and is proudly part of the collection, in the exhibition 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳 / 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 curated by Lorraine de Thibault @ohmylolz 🌈✨

Across sculpture, performance and moving image, @youngjun.tak examines the tension between sameness and difference. Inspired by early experiences working as an auditorium usher and magazine editor, the Seoul-born, Berlin-based artist renders what is ostensibly incompatible as harmonious. Within his mixed-media work, Tak draws upon the queer body as a central theme, imploring movement, choreography and gaze to frequently challenge established notions of identity and selfhood. His practice engages a broad spectrum of belief systems, be that political, spiritual, religious or cultural. For instance, in his film Love Your Clean Feet on Thursday (2023), hypermasculinity and hyperfemininity interweave, while in his sculpture Salvation (2016), the sacred and the sacrilegious collide. Throughout his extensive and diverse catalogue of work, Tak explores polarisation as an existential condition.

The new film 𝙋𝙪𝙡𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 (2026) juxtaposes two intense gazes with the melancholic music by Andreas Sieling, the organist of Berlin Cathedral: the searchlight-like eyes of the 18th-generation fish watcher, the last follower of the 200-year-old fishing tradition in Busan, and the lustful stare of a young man in Berlin-Tiergarten.

premiering:
Young-jun Tak – Pulsating | 고동치네 , 2026
4K video, CinemaScope (2.39:1), color stereo, 8:20 min

Each spring on Gadeok Island in Busan, a “fish watcher” observes the sea for subtle shifts in color that signal the arrival of spawning gray mullet, continuing a 200-year-old tradition of collective, attentive labor. Approximately 5000 miles away, a young man moves through Berlin’s Tiergarten, scanning the landscape with a similarly focused, desirous gaze. In Pulsating (2026), part of Young-jun Tak’s ongoing Ways of Lives series, these two modes of watching are brought into relation, linking labor, masculinity, and queer desire across different cultural contexts. Through close, psychologically charged camerawork and an oscillating organ score, the film sustains a tension between observation, anticipation, and the search for connection.

Let’s meet in Busan
