✨🎷 Recording Release 🎷✨

Young-Jun Lee – Breath Control
📍 premiered at Emmanuel Episcopal Church
📅 May 7, 2025

Performed by:
🎵 Chance Stine – Soprano Saxophone
🎵 Nikolai Klotchkov – Alto Saxophone

This work dives into the sounds of breath: meditation 🧘, Qigong 🌬️, gas masks 😷, rapid & deep breathing, and even the dangerous “fainting game” from my childhood in Korea. Breath can heal, thrill—or endanger.

I’m very happy to share that my piece One day I’ma be free, created in collaboration with poet Kharris Akinola, will be presented as part of Verses & Voices in Chicago this Sunday.

This collaboration has been especially meaningful to me. Working with Kharris’s words invited me to think about how music can carry a voice without speaking over it—how sound can listen, respond, and create another space for a story to resonate.

Verses & Voices, presented by Concordia Church in collaboration with Project Poetic Justice, brings together music, poetry, and community, including works created through collaborations with residents at the DC Jail.

I’m grateful to Kharris for trusting me with his words, and to everyone who has made this project possible.

Last night, we gathered for Out of Many, One—an evening of voices, stories, and music shared in an intimate space.

I am deeply grateful to all of the wonderful singers and pianists who brought such generosity, artistry, and sincerity to the program. Hearing each voice carry its own story and message made the evening feel especially meaningful.

My heartfelt thanks also go to Carol Jean for opening her home and making this gathering possible, and to everyone who joined us, listened, and shared the space with such warmth.

What stayed with me most was the feeling that many different voices could come together without losing their individuality. Each performer brought something distinct, yet together they created a shared experience that felt much larger than any one person.

Thank you to everyone who made this evening possible.

Until the next gathering. 🤍

Friday, September 25, 2026
7:30 PM

I am excited to curate this concert as the United States celebrated its 250th anniversary, Out of Many, One brings together a program of American art songs exploring the many voices, stories, memories, and experiences that shape this country.

Featuring music by Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Charles Ives, Ned Rorem, Ricky Ian Gordon, Jake Heggie, H. Leslie Adams, B.E. Boykin, and more.

Performed by
Joshua Kim • Bowen Gao • Jade Gao • Sophia Sorrentino • Mariana Weaver

with pianists
Yujin Jung • Kim Zhang

We all came to the United States from different places and met here through music. This concert celebrates that shared experience—the idea that many distinct voices can exist together without losing what makes each one unique.

Join us for an intimate evening of music, community, and reflection.

✨ Dessert reception to follow.

Honored to share my recent interview with CanvasRebel.

As someone working between composition, performance, curation, and interdisciplinary collaboration, it was meaningful to reflect on the people, experiences, and questions that continue shaping my work.

I spoke a bit about growing up in Seoul, building communities through projects like New Uncertainty Collective, and my interest in creating music that exists not only in concert halls, but also in conversation with uncertainty, memory, technology, and human connection.

Grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey so far — collaborators, performers, mentors, students, friends, and audiences.

Thank you, CanvasRebel, for the thoughtful conversation. @canvasrebel

It was such an honor to have so many members of the Advisory Board with us, and I was especially grateful that Dean Bronstein was able to join the evening as well.

What a beautiful night with voices two weeks ago.

There is always something deeply special about the human voice — perhaps the only musical medium capable of carrying direct language, emotion, and meaning all at once.

Thank you so much to everyone who came to the concert, and to all of the incredible performers who shared their artistry that evening. I am also especially grateful to Carol Jean Young for so generously hosting the event and helping create such a warm and meaningful space for music and gathering.

The performance was presented in honor and memory of Marc C. von May, and it meant a great deal to share music together in remembrance of someone who cared so deeply about the arts and community.

The evening was truly inspiring, not only for me as a curator, but also as a composer. I left feeling reminded once again why we continue to make music together.

Connecting Dots — thank you. ❤️

Over the past weeks, this project traveled across cities, rehearsals, late-night logistics, airports, countless emails, moving equipment, score revisions, conversations, dinners, and performances — and somehow became something far larger than I could have imagined when Xiaofeng and I first started dreaming about it together.

To Xiaofeng(@xiaofeng_jxf )— thank you for building this project with me from the very beginning, and for believing in it through every stage of the process.

I want to sincerely thank every composer, performer, collaborator, and audience member who became part of this experience.

And to everyone who came to the concerts in Boston and Baltimore:
thank you for listening, supporting, talking with us afterward, and giving this music your time and attention. New music only truly exists when it is shared with people, and your presence made these performances meaningful.

What moved me most throughout this project was realizing again how music creates connections between people who may have never otherwise crossed paths — across cities, countries, backgrounds, and artistic practices.

I hope this is only the beginning of many more collaborations and friendships to come.

Until next time,
YoungJun Lee
