What happens when fragrance becomes a language for heritage, memory, and belonging?

For the latest Creative Current, I sat down with Bawo Ijirigho, founder of Ilé Olomu, to talk about his unexpected journey from music and creative direction to perfumery, the legacy of his great-granduncle Nana Olomu, and the creative collaboration with master perfumer Andreas Wilhelm that brought his vision to life.

From Milo chocolate and green plantain to the deeper stories we carry with us, Ilé Olomu is creating fragrances that do more than smell beautiful. They invite us to remember, connect, and see ourselves reflected in luxury.

And after Verdant took home the 2026 Art & Olfaction Awards People’s Choice Award in the Independent category, it feels like the world is beginning to notice what Bawo has been building.

I decided to run with the graphic novel verison of this book - I feel like the format was the perfect vehicle for this story.
I also think that Bawo ( @youngonassis ) from @ileolomu was also the perfect person to discuss this book with. It made me think a little differently about what it is like to share memories and stories and how important that sharing is to make us human and alive to experiences.
Bawo and @wilhelmperfume have created something really moving in Verdant - the celebration of brightness, color and life shares the joy that Jonas finds in the warmer memories and expereinces shared.
