2026 resolution: eat good. Matisse Laida shares some of her community's favourite recipes in 'Home' – a We Eatin Good Zine. "When I started We Eatin’ Good, I was feeling incredibly disconnected. To my family, to my own body, and especially to my culture. I was craving the sense of Home. As the project has grown, I have been immensely lucky to have met and worked with artists and chefs who have shared these same feelings, and we all have used food as a way of connecting back to Home, and to each other." Woah my silly little lockdown project turned into something big and beautiful and now is being recognised by one of the largest independent publications in the country!! Being platformed by such a huge publication like Broadsheet is affirming for sureee, We Eatin’ Good is queer, of colour, and we are radical, inherently yes, but also in the way we work and practice. It’s important to me because I didn’t believe that we belonged in places and pages like that! But we do, and it’s fab, and I’m proud of how far we’ve come from just being two kids in a Brunswick West backyard imagining big big things. Shout out to @jude_____._____ for thinking this piece up, and @theaudreypayne for being a G. To Ronen, Niyanta and Wes, I’m so, so proud to be up there with you all, u inspire me everyday. My Nisha, I’m so lucky to have you by my side doing this with me.And shout out to every one of you, who come to the pop ups, dinners and parties, who’ve watched our films, seen our art, read the zine, ate our food and listened to our stories. I actually love you heaps and feel really fucking lucky to continue to feed you all the ideas that pour out of my head. Matisse Laida (they/she) is an emerging writer, producer and storyteller based on Wurundjeri Country, whose work breathes life into the margins and fills the room with warmth, truth and power. Through every word, frame, and act of care, Matisse is carving out spaces where queer, First Nations, Black and POC voices can thrive — not just survive.As the founder of We Eatin’ Good (WEG), Matisse created more than a platform, they built a table, and invited community to gather around it. WEG beautifully weaves food, identity, and joy into a series of heartfelt, culturally rich moments, spotlighting queer creatives of colour and reminding us all that storytelling is nourishment. This journey led to co-directing and producing a powerful documentary, commissioned by Multicultural Arts Victoria, which premiered at the Human Rights Arts & Film Festival and screened with ACMI Online.Matisse’s artistry reaches far beyond the screen. They’ve produced and hosted a web series with In(V)isible the Drum, curated Radical Hospitality events with Next Wave, and collaborated with OKO — a queer, Black-owned restaurant to amplify voices through a celebratory queer chef series. They are also a Young Artistic Director with A Rising Tide, continuing their unwavering commitment to curating safer, braver creative futures.Their advocacy is not performative, it’s principled, personal and persistent. Matisse speaks truth to institutions, calling for not just visibility, but genuine cultural safety, accountability, and care. “It is important to me,” they say, “that organisations not only platform diverse artists, but provide institutionally safe environments for artists and arts workers at all levels.”They are a current participant of Black Marks (Arts House/YIRRAMBOI), a graduate of the Victorian Independent Producers Initiative (TNA), and a beacon for what this industry can become when led with heart.Matisse, your voice matters.
