Friendship in Books

Woke up this morning thinking about friendship.

Meet one of my besties. I call her my sister, and everyone else does too.

I’ve known this girl since school. She turned up with an American accent, but the moment she heard my Jamaican accent, she switched straight to patois. We’ve been inseparable ever since. 😂🤣🥰

I love us. I love watching her grow, succeed, and become everything she’s worked so hard for. Happy birthday sis.
Having people who genuinely celebrate your wins is something special.

White Spaces by Elvin James Mensah

There is just something about this book, even the cover pulls me in.

I loved immersing myself in a story centered around male friendship and intimacy. Told across dual timelines, the novel follows four Black male friends from childhood into adulthood, exploring how their relationships evolve over time.

This novel tackles so many relevant and important topics, and it does so with honesty, sensitivity, and beautiful writing. There were moments that had me laughing out loud, as well as moments that left me quite emotional. I found myself not wanting the book to end, while also desperately needing to know what would happen to these characters.

The characters felt authentic and deeply vulnerable, something you don’t often see in books centred around men. Their friendships, struggles, and personal growth made them easy to connect with.

I can’t recommend this book enough. Is this one on your radar?

Book Review: The Secrets We Hide by Karin Slaughter
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Having thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the North Falls series We Are All Guilty Here, I eagerly anticipated the next instalment, The Secrets We Hide.

📖The story follows Sheriff Clifton as she investigates the murder of a police officer in her own home. As the investigation unfolds, long-buried secrets begin to surface, revealing that in a town where everyone knows everyone, nothing remains hidden for long.

💭From start to finish, this was a gripping and twist-filled read. I particularly enjoyed the small-town setting, where everyone’s business is known, adding an extra layer of tension and suspicion to the mystery. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, the plot took an unexpected turn.

Beyond delivering a compelling crime thriller, the novel also explores important and difficult topics like coercive control with sensitivity and depth.

If you’re a fan of atmospheric small-town crime fiction filled with secrets, strong characters and plenty of twists, this series is definitely worth checking out.
