In Nyala, South Darfur, a group of women gathered for a routine act of civic participation: a workshop on women’s rights. Days later, several of them were arrested.According to human rights organizations, intelligence officers affiliated with Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces detained journalists, broadcasters, and activists shortly after the session, which focused on legal protections for women and international frameworks like UN Resolution 1325 – the first formal and legal document from the Security Council that required parties in a conflict to prevent violations of women’s rights. Other women who attended similar discussions were also reportedly taken from their homes, held without charge, and denied contact with their families.Those detained include media workers and civil society leaders. Press freedom groups warn that these detentions further silence reporting from a war that is already dangerously under-covered by global media. The arrests are unfolding against the backdrop of Sudan’s ongoing conflict, where women have long been at the forefront of organizing and resistance, and are facing escalating repression.“Sudan’s three-year proxy war has devastated the lives of more than 15 million people, destroying hospitals, universities, and homes. Women have borne a disproportionate share of this suffering, facing torture, sexual violence, and forms of enslavement. Yet despite these horrors, Sudanese women continue to stand at the forefront of resistance. They have long been leaders and revolutionaries, courageously fighting for freedom, justice, and democracy. We’re honored to introduce Bayadir Mohamed-Osman as a poet, panelist, and Health & Wellness Chat Lead at the Women’s Health & Wellness Conference 2025. She will be performing a poem on Day 1, participating on a panel called “What does it mean to be in a state of Aafiyah?”, and leading a Health & Wellness Chat on journaling and reflections on Day 2.Bayadir Mohamed-Osman is a community organizer, activist, and poet whose moving messages and art have been featured in The Rolling Stone MENA, Al Jazeera English, PBS, The Washington Post, AJ+, NowThis, and NPR’s WAMU.A Sudanese American with DMV roots, Bayadir holds a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor’s in Public Health from American University. Her work includes health equity research, developing FGM tools for women, supporting young adults with disabilities, and advocating for marginalized communities.
